Ive just noticed that water cooled power steering reservoirs are available for cosworths, just wondered how effective they are, I was intending to fit either one of the original air-cooled coolers or a mocal style cooler behind the foglight grill but I can't find one small enough to fit nicely behind the grill so was wondering if the water cooled reservoir would be good enough to use on it's own without any sort of air cooled cooler.

 

On a cossie I would do all I could to help the water cooling, by not adding even more load to it, esp on a 3 door or 2wd, there's plenty of coolers that can go behind the fog aperture, even if they don't get full flow of air over the whole cooler.
Some small ones are found on carts, small motorbikes, dirt/pit bikes etc, and a very good price too.

Think ill have to take a trip to the local scrapyard and see if I can find a nice small cooler off some other vehicle then.

 

Look on ebay first, they start from around £10 NEW, so no risk of any foreign debris in them, it is on the return line so no real pressure to speak of, better safe than sorry a rack/pump would be a lot more than £10.

Trouble is they all seem to be so long, I was originally intending to have an oil cooler behind one fog grill and pas cooler behind the other but ended up mounting the oil cooler underneath the front cross member like you suggested as it was a bit big to get behind the fog grill, all the pas coolers I can see on eBay are the same length as the oil cooler I've got.

 

do u use yours on track a lot then you wouldent need to cool the power stearing fluid on a road car? i dont get why people fit oil coolers to road cars too i have 500bhp and my oil dosent go above 100 degress c which means i dont need an oil cooler

 

No it doesn't get used on track and will only be running around 300 - 330bhp when i finally get it back on the road. I know it's not necessary but as im completely rebuilding the car and have the money to spend I like the peace of mind of knowing everything is going to be up to the job. I also have a large rad, 500 cooler and will be fitting a turbo cooler, all unnecessary but at least they won't be being pushed to their limits.
With the pas cooler issue I would use the standard cooler but mines getting a bit rusty and I can't find another one, I know people who have just removed and bypassed the cooler and suffered no problems so I know it's probably nothing to worry about.

 

things like a 500 intercooler and a turbo pre rad are a good idea oil cooler is not as your oil will never get to temp and i just dont get the pas cooler on road car just not needed mate!

 

I don't get why people think a track car gives the ps a harder time, it doesn't, town work is where it gets a killing, no real air flow, plenty of turning of wheels at slower speeds.
Personally I think turbo coolers which cool after the turbo are the largest waste of space going.
Engine oil coolers have their uses, used with a STAT sandwich plate you have the best of both worlds, and unlike the hard pressed modine, doesn't put extra strain on what is already a marginal cooling system.

so why do people boil there pas fuild on track never herd of anyone doing that on the road lol my turbo cooler knocked 15-20 degrees c off my water temp and an oil cooerl with a stat will be a waste as if set to the right temp it will never open as the right oil temp is about 100 to 110 lol

 

is that not to stop super heated water from the turbo returning to the expansion tank

 

My PAS oil used to boil all the time especially on the motorway and long journeys and was becoming a problem so have opted for a 10 row 3/8 Mocal - whether it was the poor standard cooling bar blocked i don't know but it's just more straight forward swapping

 

Boiled my ps tank over on trackdays a few times, always wondered if fresh fluid would have sorted issue,is it hydroscopic ?????

 

I changed my fluid for the stuff they sell at Halfords and it did the same

I may have a nice little pas cooler with alloy tank and -6 jic fitting for sale as I am removing my pas, also turbo coolers are ok but if you have a cooling issue then sort the main rad but on a lot of turbos just remove the water from the turbo as how on earth is the water going to stay around 92 degs when it's going through a turbo at god know how much hot, most the cars I done I removed it , and they been great

 

Would a higher revving engine be key to pas fluid boiling? If the fluid boils on motorways and track...? I don't claim to know what I'm talking about, just a guess lol

 

I don't understand PAS oil and the whole system and where it transfers it's heat from - is it the movement or the compression of the oil in the rack producing some sort of energy or the rate the pump is working at - if the later reason then the harder and faster the car goes the more the pump is working

Did RS500 touring/rally cars have coolers?

 

I pretty sure its the compression of fluid through the rack as even if I just leave my 3 door idling for a while without driving it anywhere the PAS alloy tank feels warm.
