Default ST170 6 Speed box in s1...

been having a nose around after picking one up very cheap earlier. obviously the mountings need modifying and fitting the cable change. apparently the servo catches on the gear change so possibly new pedal box required. easy.

now for the bit i`m stuck with...

drive shafts are they hybrid ie: half focus and half rst?

and

the flywheel is a crappy dual mass on the st, so ive heard say that a solid zetec flywheel can be use with a vauxhall paddle clutch, is this true?

i take it the splines are totally diferent on the input shaft to the rst.

any help appreciated.

thanks. ste.

Yeah mate they are different, you can use a vauxhall let clutch plate as they have the same spline as the st, you just need a solid flywheel with slight modification, as for drive shafts, dave mac can do you a complete set of shafts with st and rst ends to fit the right c,v. Unless you go down the route of welding the two together. Oh and dont forget he speedo is electronic so that needs modifiying,

Cheers adam

Oh and are you fitting to a cvh engine as the st is rear starter and is far as i know is not an easy fit or cant be done as the oil cooler/ filter gets in the way

Hope this helps

isn't it the depth of the flywheel that's the issue?

speak to simon at sitech racing hes done a few 6 speeder conversions, even using the erst craddle and bespoke mounts that lets you keep the brake servo where it is.

Series 1s don't have the cradle or the mounts for the cradle and the ARB set up gets in the way of the cradle at the front.

thanks daz, beat me to it. how's your running now?

to be honest bezo the less modding the better. cuz I'd still like the bay to retain some original look. if I can keep the servo where it is then sweet. I also don't fancy spunking a grand on a flywheel and clutch I'm only looking around 250 horses and similar torque figure so a twin plate paddle clutch is just overkill. plus I'm a tight arse.

might tap simon up for bit of advice, no doubt he's busy and don't really like pestering people.

Getting there with work. It's came on loads when I was first playing with the ECU but then stagnated. Managed to borrow Big Will for an evening and we got a bit of boost control sorted. It's getting there but still plenty to do yet!

Well for 250bhp just keep the standard flywheel and clutch.
Or for 300 use a helix clutch and flywheel package for an uprated ST170.

Shafts keep the inner O/S shaft and bearing carrier, you will have to use the ST 2 piece sump to bolt the bearing carrier to. Then get your other outer shafts cut and welded. They should both be the sale length.

We have mounted the boxes on the cradle and suspended them depends on your application.

Just cut the top off one of the selector levers to clear the servo - easy.

Clutch bolt a 1.25 Fiesta clutch master to the bulk head and use the std 1.25 pipe, you may have to ream out the ST170 slave cylinder fitting to fit.

Simon.

What length should the two shafts be? Or is it different for each setup?

Cheers

What uprated clutch would you recommend fitting for for 370bhp and 400ft'lbs torque?

thanks simon, big big help. however i really dont trust dual mass flywheels, seen far too many blow themselves to bits. is it true about leaving the zetec flywheel on there and and putting the calibra turbo clutch on?

thanks, ste.

The drive shaft length is dependant on the front caster angle, aka how far forward in the wheel arch the wheel sits.

Not got the hang of multi quote yet!!!!!

I use the Helix single plate 215mm single plate race clutch, and have been for almost 4 years now with zero problems. I also use them on my FRSmk2 big turbo conversions with 505 ft/lbs of torque with big sticky rubber.

Flywheels - I have a custom one that gets made.
