did a filter and oil change on the cossie the other day then took it round the block and parked back up and left it on the drive,thought all was well but had alook under the sump and i could see oil had leaked onto the drive so come to conclusion that sump nut or seal may be knackered so bought a new sump plug and fitted that today so hope that sorts it.Had to drain new oil into clean container so i could fill back up once new plug fitted but after pouring oil back into engine at the bottom of the container i noticed small metal fragments that looked like nail clippings!

what does this signal?? anyone had this?

if its alloy it could be a thread from your sump plug

 

most proberly off the old sump plug u must have stripped the threads if it was leaking or maybe the threads on the sump its self what type of metal is it? but then if its not leaking now more than likely the sump plug id forget about it or you will just worry your self to death thinking is it going to blow up lol

get your self a magnetic sump plug

this helps to stop metal fragments floating around your sump hence being sucked up in the engine

 

Or use a piece of wire and magnetise your disptick for free, that way you pull all the metal out, and it's a much bigger surface area to stick to.

It does indeed look circlip like, but it would never have got through the tiny gap between piston and bore in that condition, looks way too untouched for that.
I've never had a SINGLE drop of oil from a sump on any car, simply use sealant, hylomar etc, whatever you have on the threads, stops 100% of the leaks, even caused my astra sump to leak, due to rusting so got a new one.

You strip back around 6" of the insulation, wrap it around the metal part to be magnetised, then WEARING gloves touch the ends of the wire one on negative one on positive, keep dabbing on the wire will HEAT up alarmingly ie glowing, so much caution.
A simpler way is to buy a magnetizer/de magnetizer for around Ł3 on ebay etc, intended for screwdrivers etc, but works on anything metal stroked with it.
Another way to do it is to use a fastener of the same thread that is about 1" longer and use that as the sump plug after magnetizing.
You will though this way need to lathe/machine down the shaft of the fastener, which you may not have access to.
The magnetized plugs you can buy are good, but as usual some are a piss take price imo.

Have you tried to put a magnet on the filings to see if it is Ally or steel ? if it is ally I would say its you're sump threads that have striped due to over tightening the sump plug, it happens over time and gradually gets worse until there is no thread left, it happened to mine but I managed to tap the sump out to a larger size while still on the car and I then fitted a femco oil drain plug which makes oil changes easier now.

If you magnetised your dipstick, how on earth would you get it back in? Wouldn't it stick to the holder, making it a pain in the arse?
