Hi everyone, it's me again. You may remember I recently made a thread about putting a new gearbox in my car. Quick background, it's a '93 mk5 Escort, I've put a mk6 box into it(IB5 type).


The mk6 box has a switch on the...uhh, I guess you could call it rear? Opposite end to the bell housing, at the bottom like(can take a picture if it helps). I don't actually know what it's for, but I know the mk5 box didn't have a switch/connector like this.

Anyhow, my real big issue is that the box is in and works, but it is leaking trans oil HEAVILY from this switch on the box. Does anybody know what this switch is, anything regarding leaks around this switch, and if there's any fix which isn't a whole new gearbox? I'm really desperate, I've only had the car a few months, but if this isn't fixable I'm going to have to get shot of it.

As it's something that is not used on your car, as your original box didn't have it, I would suggest it is a additional speed sensor, from a later car, most likely the road speed sensor the box/ecu uses as opposed to your speedo, reading sensor, which may not even be electronic anyway, doe sit have a speedo cable ?
What ever the case it doesn't alter the leak, simply take off the sensor and re seal it, that's all that's needed.

My brother(my mechanic, lol) said it was a reverse light switch, I've literally just spoken to a local ford dealer on the phone who say it was a switch used on the box for one year, and shows as a reverse light switch. I haven't actually tested the existing one(transferred from the other box) to see if it works to turn the light on, though it has been fitted into the new box. I think my brother tried to put some sealant around, but had little luck(possibly the leak got worse), the guy on the phone at ford sort of suggested the same thing, as it's not a part needed for me car.

 

It's bloody big for a reverse light switch!!
Take switch out and use some loctite 5900 or 5910, guaranteed never to leak again.
