Default car batterys, different sizes etc?

Just interested, a guy in work has a Audi A6 estate(v6 diesel) and he was telling me his battery cost 150 quid he said its bigger and you need to remove the plastic panel at the top of the bay to remove/refit a battery. So whats the difference for example between his battery and say a escort 1.8 or a mondeo etc is it just the amount of power? and the fact the Audi has the kitchen sink in there and needs the extra power?

P.s i had to jump start him so i hope his huge battery didnt kill mine

The batteries for diesel cars are more expensive, generally, than those for petrol. the diesel engine needs a larger capacity battery for the glowplugs and feeding the high torque starter motor needed for turning over a high compression engine such as the diesel.

Battery capacity is measured in Amp hours, for example a 250 AH battery will provide 1Amp draw for 250 hours, or to look at it a different way a 250Amp draw for 1 hour etc.

A lot of modern cars have batts hidden away under covers, I guess it;s for protection but there will be a better reason i'm not picking up on for sure.

The cost is down to the type of battery fitted, a lot of higher end cars are fitted with AGM batteries these days, a G14 for a audi for example is £180, but they are seriously better than std type batteries in ah and especially CCA and do not lose power anything like as fast as a std battery when not used, leave it 2 months and it will start up again.
They can of course be specced with std lead/acid batteries.
