Got a max of £2k to spend on something to replace my aging van with, its only used for tip runs and getting stuff from B&Q/garden centers, so probably max of 2k miles a year.
Thought 4x4 might be handy if we keep getting snow each winter too.
RAV4! Freelanders at around the 2k mark should be avoided IMO.
Freelanders should be avoided all together. Personally wouldn't bother with a rav 4 either. Either get a proper 4x4 like and older disco, or just get another van and some winter tyres if you're that worried...
Buy a disco if you need a cheap 4x4, freeloaders are generally pretty shit, headgaskets, cracking manifolds etc and RAV4's make you look like a bum botherer
literally just sold my td4 this morning! Was a great work horse and super reliable, no matter what people say about the running gear.
Theres loads you can do to them to tidy them up a bit and quite cheaply too, and if you stick a 2 inch lift kit and some bronco diamond backs on there, you have a seriously capable off roader for some weekend fun - with no big diffs to worry about.
Seriously buy a freelander but get a td4 - you wont regret it. Just stay away from the 1.8 k series headgasket muncher. Can email you some detailed pics if you want a closer look at one i still got all mine on the computer.
Freelanders are OK if you get a good 'un, a bad 'un will cost you dearly. Admittedly i work at a Land Rover specialist so only ever see the bad broken ones, but there seems to be a lot of that type about. Overheating and Head Gaskets, Turbo's, Injectors, Fuel Pumps, I.R.D units, Viscous units and rear Subframe mounts are the usual suspects.
