Default What's the limit of standard rods and pistons on the YB

So just wondering what are the limits of a fully worked big valve head, and big cams on a standard 200 4x4 bottom??. Has anyone done this?? Before I start spending shit loads of USA green, I'd like to know the limits
of the rods and pistons. 500hp?? or no way, and who's proven it. Thanks peeps

Don't worry FM, as you'll never get anywhere near the limit!

It's all down to cylinder pressures and revs, so depends what rev limit, c/r, turbo and boost pressure you are wanting to run as to the limits.

My 515bhp engine was achieved on standard rods and Mahle pistons and was rev limited at 8000rpm.

If you have a huge turbo and a massive intercooler so that you have a good enough supply of the correct temperature of boost (ie as cold as possible) then you can keep upping the amount of power it can handle by retarding the timing more and more, but it will be horribly ineffiecent (due to the timing) and very laggy (due to the huge turbo)

Seems like a stupid way to spend your money when you can just fit some decent rod and pistons for not much more than a grand anyway.

The rods will handle it, but you would need to change the piston dude .

See Erik I told you... Would replacing the rod bolts be good idea? (as far as reinforcing the rods), I know it helps on the 2.3L Turbo engines we have here. Also how much low end torque is lost when the compression is lowered? (7.8.1, 7.4.1, etc).

You can regain some of the lost torque by mapping the ignition to have more advance, but its still noticeable, as soon as you are on boost though it doesnt matter.

A decent set of bolts is a good investment for any engine IMHO

Yup, lowering the compression makes the off boost power less, but it dont really change when it comes on boost, so no more laggy really, just a bigger jump in power from off to on boost.

Big cams and a huge port head, now THAT will make it a laggy car.

No one has tested a std 200 bottom end to destruction yet!!!!!...A std crank is good for 800plus BHP...Rods so far have coped with a few 600bhp engines and mahles can cope with around 500bhp....This is from researching with pros not guessers Will a std rod cope with 700 big ones?....Its a fooking risky proposition!

Steve. She is proper fine, looks like she's nicked her grandma's bra in your avatar though

Fastmaul. Think stu and karl were going to buy an engine and find this out at one point but have since laughed the idea iirc. dont think its worth the risk with your own engine though

Craig- When i first saw her i thought it was this bird we know from round here, looks JUST like her, inc the incredibly oversize tits, same tatoo on lower back as well, and she has a website somewhere, i NEED to find it

But the one from round here isnt called faith (but most have fake names), and shes not northern and she 17 so wouldnt be strictly legal to do all that
And she got a pierced clit n always getting it out, so cant be that bird, far too shy must be her identical twin

Dom- I tell ya what, il start a post in the muppet room

Thanks guys for the reply,
Chip I know for you it might only be a grand, but a grand UK is almost 2 Grand USA.
I don't think I'm going over 550hp yet that's my goal for now at the wheels, none of this Flywheel BS. So then standard rods with ARP bolts(maybe shoot peened) and better pistons??

Oi, stop ruining my post!! off to the muppet room!!!

Fastmaul, didnt realise you were the other side of the pond.
You will be able to get a set of arrows over there for peanuts.
Same for pistsons, its far cheaper stateside than it is over here.

Gettign hold a replacement head, crank and block if a rod lets go though is going to cost you big money i suspect?

Again there isnt one set figure, it all depends on how you achieve it, on a nice effiecent GT series turbo, moderate boost and using ntirous you will be easily able to handle 500bhp on a standard bottom end, but with massive boost from a T4 spinning its guts out you wont.

Ignition timing is SO critical to the amount of strain on the pistons as well, but conversely of course the more you retard it the less power you get, so its a case of just being pointless to try as you are piling more and more boost in for less and less gains.

Yeah, I'm over here. I thought Arrow (rods) where from the UK? I have a couple of choices on Pistons. I actually have 2 engines one is 2wd and the other is the 4x4 one (which is the one that I want to get built up)

I'm going to use a GT 35/40 turbo, but no nitrous. (I know, I know...the Yank NOS systems are crap!! even though lot's of V8 boys, import racers use them. )

When i say "arrow" rods, im just using the term completely incorrectly im afraid mate, i just mean steel rods, its like when i say "hoover" meaning a vacuum cleaner, or "coke" meaning cola.

Any make of ford rods will be fine, must admit im not sure where arrow are made.
But carillo or similar is fine to, or seinz ones which i believe are cheap over there?

As for the nitrous thing, american kits are very well established in america, and the way in which they use them tends to mask a lot of the problems.

Just wait till next year though and see what my friend Johnny Barb is doing over there with his car, he's only running 6.5 at the moment, against top guys running 6.10 but its very much still being developed
