Default If you buy tax online are you covered without disc?

I have bought my road tax online, however my tax disc has not shown up yet and just wanted to double check that you are allowed to use the car on the road without a valid tax disc displayed in the window?
Seems to be a grey area as i know that you used to get 14days after the expired date, however my car last had tax in july 2010 so doesn't really count.
cheers

You can use the car, and you wont show up on the ANPR system so wouldnt get a tug from an ANPR officer, BUT you can still get done for failure to display, but it would have to be a real wankstain copper to do you for that if they checked with the DVLA and saw you had tax and were awaiting the disc.

Not covered.
No grey area here.
If you tax the car and it starts immediately after the expired one you can drive, yours expired months ago and therefore you aint.

As far as i was aware, if the car has been taxed (i.e ran out the month just past) and you have applied for a new disc online, you have 5 days grace period into the new month for delivery of the tax disc. In which you can drive on the road. I think the police can report you to the DVLA, but if the DVLA see you have purchased tax and it's on the way they won't have any problems with it. I have driven like this several times and had no problems what so ever.

Edit: to say in your case you won't be able to drive i don't think.

does that still count if you back dated it to the begining of the month?
like i taxed it last week, however i started it from the begining of dec instead of januaury.

No, i think it only applies if the car was on the road with a 6/12 month disc then you apply for a new one online at the end of the month it expires. Then you get your 5 days.
Wouldn't have thought backdating it would count for owt.

I'd drive it, as said you'd only get done for failure to display as the car is taxed, and the copper would have to be a total jobsworth bell-end to do you for that, unless you'd pissed him off about something else

the law states that you must only drive displaying a valid tax disc

you can however, continue to display the out of expired disc for up to 5 days from date of expiry if you have paid for and are awaiting the receipt of an online disc through the post

as czech mate says; your car is taxed and wont show as untaxed through anpr, you'd be extreamly unlucky to get a complete jobsworth of a cooper have you on non display

legally you need to show your tax disc, but the chances of of getting done for failure to display is extreamly slim

Not covered.
Read the DVLA website where you tax the car, clearly states it isn't, no grey area.

If your vehicle is not currently taxed you need to go to the post office, not do it online...

Cut and pasted....

I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?

When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

once its says its taken your card online the car is taxed makes no difference if its displayed or not, the display rule is for the old days.

if the copper is not happy phone DVLA and point the phone at him.

just read Trevs cut and paste.

That's shit

I would take them to court, they take your money and you not taxed.

WRONG

I feel the rule will be changed at some point

I don't think being taxed is actually in dispute, it obviously is if he has taxed it online.
The issue is, if you do it online prior to the old discs expiry, you cannot be prosecuted for failure to display, if you tax it after the old one expires, they can hit you with a failure to display.
Would take a pedantic copper to do it i think, but it is possible....

The 5 day exemption for displaying the new tax disc also covers you if you display the SORN, which I assume your car must have been since its had no tax since July as long as you applied for the tax before the SORN expired?

Problem solved if you did

I bet its to stop the old Delboy thing "The Tax is in the Post" which does not wash these days.

The rule should be if its on the system or its displayed.

I (and several friends too) have all been pulled with a conformation email from the DVLA saying tax has been paid for and never had any trouble.

Some of those times the cars were on SORN for months too.
As stated, although it's TECHNICALLY against the law, since you can get it on line there's a lot more lee way, as long as the car comes back as being taxed. I'm guessing the law to display will change soon as it's not being enforced frpom what I've seen.

It would take a properly wanky copper and a bad attitude towards the police to get done for it.

I drove round for 3 weeks with just the confirmation email as the disc was delivered to my parents house.

The bumpf that came in the post with my last tax disc said yes, you can use the car, just so long as you display the disc that you last used before it expired.

If it were me I'd print off the conformation email saying I'd paid and use the car otherwise you'd have been better off waiting until jan 1st..
