Hi all,
Does anyone know how to set the timing on a Duratorque engine? I've bought a car which has apparently slipped a tooth causing the car to die. Before stripping the car I'm going to see if setting the timing up correctly will get the car up and running.
I only got the car last night so I'm trying to get as much info as possible before deliving into it.
Cheers
Dave

There is coloured teeth on the chain, the cams and pump are locked by pins thru the pulleys and the crank via a pin thru the crank position sensor hole, it will be the tensioner and possibly the runners that have caused it, the non return rachet in the tensioner fails.

Thanks for the reply. That's brill, I'll double check everything and go from there. Apparently the bloke didn't put enought anti freeze in and when he tried to start it the engine was frozen solid. Maybe an engine strip anyway but worth a shot.

An easier check than removing the timing cover
Would be to take the rocker cover off
And see if the rocker shafts are loose,
When the tensioner fails on these and the chain
Jumps, 9 times out of 10 the pistons hit the valves
Which then cracks the cam carrier, normally
On the inlet side.
If it has, it will need a cylinder head for definite,
Bottom ends are normally ok tbh.
Hope that helps, Karl.
