On my focus st170 I have a annoying humming coming from the rear. now I think its the bearing but when i jacked the rear up i could not feel any play in the wheels. it gets worse when in a straight line.and gets louder going fast. if i were on a right hand bend or turn to the right the noise dissappears! which to me makes me think the rear left bearing is on its way out?? any ideas?

I did spin it and must say it didnt sound great but it had no play or anything in it. dont think its much to replace anyway so will get a new one or swap the hub from the st170 i am breaking
how strange i was about to start a new thread about the same issue I'm having with my st170 only slightly different, i have no humming sound when driving in a straight line at all only when turning in left i get a humming sound from the rear? but it doesn't happen all the time, only on left turns that have a slight gradiant and even then its not every time, i have got 2 sound clips of the sound, the first one you can barely hear the sound at 5 seconds in, and the second one, the faint sound can be heard at 3 seconds in

The rear bearings are a common problem on a focus, they are pressed in so you will need a press to change them, otherwise you can buy new hubs with bearings already pressed in.

Check the rear tyres dont have any flat spots on them (usually on the iside edges), focus's commonly wear rear tyres like 50 pence pieces which gives wheel bearing failure like symptoms.

i swapped the bearing over from my other focus and still got the humming noise. i have heard that the parada spec 2 make a lot of road noise? am gonna swap my st170 rims onto the back to confirm it
If the noise increases with speed or increases when you turn one way or the other then it's almost certainly the wheel bearing.
If it gets louder when you're turning right then it's the left one and vice versa.
They only cost about Ł35 each from a good parts place and about the same or less to fit...no biggy.

yeh will try later when i finish work. the tyres on my st rims are only cheap ones and they never made a noise so hopefully when i swap rims over it will stop humming but i will have to put the st200 wheels back on as i dont want a mis match looking car but at least i know its the tyres then and could look at some different tyres
