Do i need this heat exchanger?, and how will it affect the water and oil temps on start up and when driving it hard, I just want minimal fuss on my YB without putting the engine in danger mind!

the modine oil/water heat exchanger works in 2 ways. firstly it helps to get the oil up to working temperature quicker by using the water (that heats relatively quickly) to heat it, but then once the oil is tending to get hotter than the water it will work the other way around and use the water to cool the oil (as heat transfer can only take place from a hot thing to a cooler thing).

i would use it, unless it proves to be inadequate at keeping oil temps down in which case, as alan says you should be using a air/oil heat exchanger.

personally, if you are considering an air/oil, i would add it to the water/oil one, as an air/water one is no use if the car's not moving (for example in the paddock during idle cool down)
