As per title, after a couple of years of on-off graft and nearly giving up on it altogether, it's running and I drove it for the first time the other day!

Over the moon with it,

Here's a couple of vids - only running it gently right now as a lot of new parts have been fitted etc.







Bit of a shonky vid this one as I'd not bled the brakes yet here and had only just got it running, so was trying to steer, stop with the handbrake and video at the same time! (Don't worry - I was on private property)
Note the FRS clocks - nice feature in a MK3 fiesta Just need to investigate why the boost gauge isn't doing much at the moment.

It's all running on a MK1 Focus RS loom and ECU, that made running the dash quite simple too.

It's also got an MTX75 'Box and the obligatory Quaife ATB Diff.

Yeah fitting the FRS clocks into an earlier Ford eg S1/S2 FRST is quite involved It's perfectly possible though, with some money, time and patience



1. Firstly you need an electronic vehicle speed sensor (VSS) to send out a 26 pulse/driveshaft revolution - The FRS has an MTX75 which my car also uses so that part was simple as the Focus/Mondeo MTX75's came with that sensor fitted as standard.

2. The FRS dash gets the Speedo, Tacho & Boost gauge data from the SCP data bus that is basically 2 wires that go from the ECU to the dash (via the OBD II port). So doing what I did and using a Focus RS loom/Ecu is the best, most starightforward way.

3. If you're using wheels much smaller than the FRS 18" rims (I'm using RS2000 15") than you need to interrupt the signal wire from the VSS and connect it to a fequency modulating device or "speedo healer" (I'm using a Dakota Digital SGI-5) -they cost about Ł50 and let you program in whatever calibration factor you need.

4. You need to make the Fuel gauge read the correct way around - if you just connect a MK3 Fez (and probably an Escort S2) sender straight to the FRS dash then the Fuel gauge will read "full" when empty and will read "empty" with the warning lamp on, when full! I inverted the sender on the pump shaft so that the resistor arm moves the opposite way - now works perfectly

5. Finally, you need to remove whatever warning lamps you don't need (eg airbag, seatbelt ABS etc) or they will always be lit and irritate the hell out of you!

I can already confirm that it does go rather well!

At the moment it's running on a standard Focus MK1 RS map, just for running-in. Once i get back from Afghanistan next April I'll get Motorsport Developments to live map it for a reliable and useable 290-300BHP. On my 2.3 engine that's only the same as a 1.6 making 210 or so BHP so shouldn't be too stressed.

Headline-grabbing power figures were never the aim here, I just wanted to tread a different path and planned for the end result to be a reliable, useable (but also fast! ) car

Yeah the ST170/6-Speed RS1800 ("The Manj") is still going strong - "frsjon" owns it now and has done lots more to it, he has replied to this thread a few posts back

 

Nice to see something different, looks a good engine spec and those Focus RS clocks are a great improvement over the standard mk3 Fiesta ones

The MK5 Fiesta pedal box had to be modified to fit the MK3 Fiesta, it did take a couple of hours to do as I had to add some new metal to the back to allow me to bolt it to the original MK3 mounting holes in the bulkhead. Also, holes had to be neatly made in the bulkhead where the clutch master cylinder inlet/outlet pipes go. It wasn't really difficult, just time-consuming! - there's a full build pics on fiestaturbo.com member's gallery.

I did get a local hydraulic hose specialist to swage the gearbox-end of a MK1 Focus 2.0 clutch pipe to the clutch master cylinder-end pipe from a MK5 fiesta as the Fiesta clutch slave cylinder has a smaller fitting than the Focus one. He only charged me a fiver to make it and it works a treat!

Fitting the MTX75 involved chopping some of the inner wing out then re-welding some 5mm thick steel back in where it wouldn't foul the gearbox. Everything was seam-sealed afterwards before the bay was resprayed. Again, full build pics on fiestaturbo.com.

I had some custom driveshafts made which are basically shortened 2.0 Focus MK1 items. To allow the Focus outer CV joints to fit my Fiesta, I fitted the later MK3.5 (1994>) fiesta front hubs/carriers which Focus MK1 outer CV's fit perfectly.
