Default Best road Legal tyres for road and track days 888s?

What's the best rubber for an R34 skyline GTt full road car about 350 bhp? Ive been looking at r888s but there must be better out there than them, they must be road legal and perform well on track too, which Avon or Dunlop Sp tyres have been used and recommended? Also for a similar power 2wd sapphire cossie, what have you used?

i dont see why people are still using 888s so much, yoko a048s last much better, and are similar price now, 888s used to be cheaper and were good value for money, not so much now.
never tried the dunlops.
arent kuhmo now doing a similar tyre?

Federal 595 RS-R is meant to be leagues ahead of R888's. Miles cheaper too!

Yoko have just got an AD08 out now,not a full road or track. full tread rather than half like the 888.

lasted VERY well on my R34 GTR.

I'd use Dunlop dz03 now that the Toyos are not the bargain they once were.

I am suprised about that ! my mistake then I actually thought it was you who had said the car ate through them.

As pointed out though 888's are SO bloody expensive now there are better options out there and from what I am told the A048 for example will outlast a 888 on any car, I'd of thought the options of better compounds would have somethign to do with that though.

http://www.driftworks.com/shop/tyres.html

The Federal 595 RSR Tyre is the tyre of choice for serious track work or a road and track car.
We have been using the RSR for four years now. Our many wins in competition had a big part to play in bringing the RSR to Europe.
We use the RSR on our track cars, our drift cars, and our road cars.
For those of you that don't know the RSR, it's probably best if we compare it to the R888.
In terms of outright grip, it offers 95% of the R888's dry performance. But where the RSR really comes into it's own is as an all rounder. It has much more tread, and the V Pattern clears water extremely well. It's also a relatively quiet and comfortable tyre for road use. It heat cycles well, and I have had 11k miles on a set on my M3 including two trips to the Nurburgring, and two track days where I was pushing extremely hard.
Perhaps the thing we best love about the RSR when comparing to the R888, is that it has so much more feel on the edge of traction, allowing you to really find your limits and get the most out of your suspension setup.

Simply put. There is no better value for money for the performance. We're already seeing that it is fast becoming the tyre of choice for the Nurburgring as the surfaces ever changing conditions there really suit the Federal 595RSR's diverse handling characteristics.
Yes I have. Leagues ahead as in they actually do something when it's more than damp.

Sorry... how can it be leagues ahead!

when even the people bigging them up say they only offer 95% of the grip of an R888!!!!

I have a feeling that the people writing that also might be slightly 'in' with federal

They do sound good though. Will do some more research. Sounds like could be good road tyre for M3.

Nah man... I had the same set of rears on my R34, did at least 4 trackdays... then did 2 with same tyres on 911... countless road miles on both cars.

then gave em to a mate who did 3 trackdays and 3 Ring trips with them on the back of a 928

God know what happened to make em last that long!

They were Holy!

I have known of similar 888's but it does seem most aren't that luck with them lol

I do know if anyone was likely to kill a set of tyres it would be you though so they are obviously not that bad !

Kumho is another option, and Hankook, people at the ring were raving about the Kumho semi slick a few years back.

Who does some good deals on Kumho or Hankook these days, I've priced up some 888's in the sizes I need and there about twice what they were a year ago !

Read it again, 95% of the dry grip, but these actually work when it's wet. They also last longer at higher temps where R888's wear quickly!

So what, driftworks have a sponsorship deal with them, they wouldn't use them if they were shit would they.

Price wise, and that's if you can find somewhere stocking 888's.

225/45/17 Ł111 vs Ł158
255/40/17 Ł135 vs Ł170
215/45/17 Ł105 vs Ł135

So thats almost the same dry performance, they last longer, work in the wet, and are quite a bit cheaper. Good enough for me to call it leagues ahead.

Being serious though, try them, you might be suprised.

888s lasted me atleast a couple of thousand miles+ a few track days, also thought they were brilliant in the wet.

an independant review on the federals from someone who is not sponsered by them!

from pistonheads...

I know thats just one person.... but I trust that review over someone who gets them for free and is sponsered by them.

Leagues ahead? I think not.

Seem like a different kind of tyre to me. More fast road than trackday...

so not fair to compare.

For every review for a certain tyre, you'll get one against. I like to try them for myself rather than what someone else says

How does it seem a different king of tyre? The op wanted a tyre for road and track days.

different type of tyre to an R888 I meant clearly.

I'd like to try them as well, but I would always take an independant persons view over someone paid to use them

Also all the 888s iv bought have lasted no time at all,the last ones only two trackdays and they were shit too,3 good laps then all over the show!!!
Funny though the set i bought a few years ago lasted maybe 3-4 track days...

r888's were the obvious choice as they were quite a bit cheaper than a048's

now they are roughly the same price a048's look more appealing

though these kuhmo v70a's seems good and have good reviews, i might try them next

never heard of the federal one's

i need a full set so will shop around, unlike 6mth+ ago i would have just got r888's

The Hankook test of the Ventus Evo V12 K110 conducted at Sepang makes a good read, within a second of the dedicated wets and drys lap after lap, and outlasted both wets and drys, and were still legal to use for loads of miles afterwards.
Tests conducted with a sti scoob over a full day, I'll see if I can find a link.

r888's have to different compounds theres a medium and soft ive got the medium and that have lasted a long time 4 track days 8 r.w.y.b days and driving hard

the toyo's are a track tyre that can be used on the road wheres the fed's are a road tyre that might hold up to track abuse coz slicks are not leagle on road the toyo's are the close'est to slicks and get better when worn as the tread has gone as it is then like a slick

just a shame the price of r888's have gone up

Why do you think in formula 1 or any top class racing actually that they throw the Tyres away after they have used them once or twice?

I've not got their "track tyres" as such but i've got the RE-070's on my DC5 and I can't rate them highly enough. I've done about 13k on them (including a 'Ring trip) and they've still got about 2mm of tread left. Immense in the dry and suprisingly good in the wet too.

so a048s for the safe option and Federals may well be a bargain for the price, maybe worth a try. That and the Kumhos but definately not r888s for the price of them. Thankyou, something to work on

Less flex on the blocks of treads is an advantage, but heat cylced rubber is a disadvantage.

If you really want the best from a set of 888's or similar, then buy them and have them shaved down to 2mm of tread, then use them.
TOTALLY different to them being worn out heat damaged rubber at the same depth though.

I have been using Michelin Pilot Sport Cups lately after the recomendation of Mike Rainbird to try them and Ive been very impressed, they dont seem to overheat as easily as 888 mediums do, and yet they seem to grip just as well.

They are standard fitment on CSL and GT2's for a reason I guess!
