PassionMerc - W210 Diff whine
Here's one for the Merc experts amongst us:
My dad's 1999 E240 has developed a nasty drivetrain whine. We had it running on a ramp and the noise seems to come from the differential.
Now is it possible to rebuild one yourself or is it better to get a 2nd hand unit?
Also if you know anyone breaking a W124 or W210, please let me know. All the places here try to charge me an arm and a leg for what essentially is a set of gears and bearings.
Thanks in advance!

2nd hand unit would be best IMO; normally the merc drive trai is bullet proof
can be had cheap in the UK http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MERCEDES-W210-...item4cf17e8ee5

surely there are merc breaker yards in Germany? considering they are after all German, i would have thought you'd have stacks of spares in yo country?

Engine doesn't matter too much, doesn't have to be from an E240.
Yes we do have merc breaker yards but prices are sky high and the parts very sought after. Also, most of the replacement diffs seem to be knackered, too, hence the rebuild question.
Oh, and trust me, nothing on a late 1990s Merc is bullet proof. If you wan't German reliability, buy a Focus or Fiesta...
