Default Electricial help......

I have a machine which is supposed to be single phase, and needs a plug and flex wiring in...

But.... There are four wires a Red,Green,Blue and yellow (yellow is a earth)

Anyone know why there is 4 wires when single phase is 3? or have they sent me the wrong machine?

awaiting my sparky to get back to me but dont want to waste his time getting here if its a 3 phase sent in error..

what options have i got guys?

cant send it back.....

havnt got 3 phase

Looked at inverters and rang a few places but they keep saying i need to wire it do the motor, problem is it has a basic computer that gets power from somewhere so need that to work too. The computer has a note saying use 240v fuse but does that mean it will be single phase? so can wire seperate?

Every company i rang, i said "can i not have single phase in to your inverter, then the output of the inverter wire to the mains power socket of the machine", but they say no?????????

There is..........

Phase Converters
Often the advantages of 3 phase motors, and other 3 phase equipment, make it smart and easily worthwhile to convert single-phase power to generate 3 phase. Small and large customers, such as residential, rural businesses, or farm properties may not have access to a 3 phase supply, or may not want to pay for the extra cost of a 3 phase service, but may still wish to use 3 phase equipment. Such 3 phase converters may also allow the frequency (see also frequency converters) to be varied allowing for different equipment frequency requirements (50Hz, 60Hz, 400Hz, etc.) and also for motor speed control

Depends on a lot of things really.yes you can run the computer independently from the machine however there may sometimes be control circuit issues as there maybe an emergency stop or something wired in through the computer, although that's unlikely but not unheard of.ensure that it's not hard wired before you bring the 240 supply from elsewhere as it could go bang, usually 240 fed machines use a kettle lead wired into the machine panel somewhere.

With most industrial use,240 is found via one of the three phases and a neutral, the amount of pricks I've seen try and get 240 by going phase to earth is scary, you just get a loud bang and live framework then!!

Judging by the colours you've mentioned wiring wise,it's quite an old machine, modern three phase is brown, grey black and of course blue neutral,yellow/green earth.

Could you say what machine it is? Dependant on the current the machine takes will determine what converter you require, there's loads on eBay ranging from Ł100 to Ł1000.

Quick note,if you start it up and it turns the wrong way, swap two of the phases around and it'll turn in the other direction.

the best option is to sell it and buy a single phase model, as said there is converters out there but is it worth the hassle?
