Default Gearbox/Clutch Issue, any help please?

Started my Skoda up tonight and drove 100yds to a set of traffic lights, pulled off from the lights and went to change to 2nd gear and all was fine, but when I went for 3rd it lost power and it wouldn't come out of 2nd. I put my foot on the throttle and the car drove, so pumped the clutch and it became free.

The same thing happened again 10 minutes up the road (Can't remember which gear). I stopped, put it into reverse and you could hear a noise similar to failed release bearing, but it only went away if the car wasn't moving or I took it out of gear, putting clutch down made no difference.

20 mins later I drove 3 miles and it was absolutely fine, but I don't fancy it getting stuck in gear during the day with traffic, etc.

Anyone have any idea what it could be? Release bearing, clutch, dual mass flywheel or gearbox? I don't wanna get the box built if it's only a bearing and I don't wanna take the box out to find it was an engine mount or something.

I've been told it is the clutch master cylinder, anyone know how I can test it?

Cheers.

Does indeedy sound as though it is a hydraulic clutch ?, and that either slave cylinder or master cylinder seals are going.

You can remove the pipe at the slave cylinder and block it with a fitting then see if pedal sinks, or remove at master and block hole see if pedal sinks with pressure held constant.
It's usually the slave as the shit/crap in the fluid seems to collect there, but if cheap enough I would replace both, they are both the same age, better one isn't going to be far behind ?, maybe just a reseal kit would do the trick, depends on cost of new cyls, wear to existing ones.

Thanks mate, I was thinking of doing both. Master cylinder is Ł55 on EBay for brand new Skoda item, so gonna phone Skoda and ask prices tomorrow and probably change both as you suggest. Just gotta find time to fix it now

Thanks for everyone's help.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. I've fitted a new clutch master and slave cylinder and bled the system through with a pressure bleed tool, when I first went out the car did exactly as it did before, but only once and did not do anything forthe rest of the evening. Took the car out today and it got stuck in 1st gear again, so obviously what I've replaced wasn't the problem. Anymore suggestions please?

octavia gearbox's are famous mate
usually the diff bearings that go,
let the diff move around to much and jam up all sorts,
then launch themselves thru the side casing,
if its still 1 piece get it looked at asap so it can be repaired,
as 2nd hand 1's are expensive,
what age/ engine is it?

Cheers, was hoping it wasn't the box. It's a 1.8t AUQ engine with 5 speed box. I'm gonna rip the box out at some point this week and will replace clutch and flywheel to a solid one, will find out how much to get gearbox checked over also. Seems the only options I have :headbang:

Thanks

When the box is out how can I tell if the dmf is fucked? Never worked with dmf before, so have no clue.

just hold it and turn it,
should turn no more than around 15-20mm side to side,
should be no in-out movement
should feel resistance when turning it
but tbh if its the dmf thats causing it, it'll be realy badly worn and be flopping around all over the place, shouldn't be hard to notice realy

your clutch plate is fooked mate ours done exactly the same thing 3 weeks ago, i was away at knockhill and sarah rang to say the skoda was stuck in gear lol.

Go to your local euro car parts and buy a solid flywheel and clutch conversion kit job done.

Cool, will test the emf when I rip it apart later this week, thanks

Dicko, have you got part numbers for solid clutch and matching flywheel from ECP? Or will they have it listed as an upgrade? How much was they to replace?
