Default what do think? RST brakes, no abs, no prop valves and what master/servo

Hi all,

Right for any one who has seen my resto page, i have made up the rear brake lines, ditched the proportioning valves that operate off the swing arms and chucked the random abs away....

Now, i am planning to use inline brake compensator's from a mk5 escort like twins and puss have, but wondered (before i buy them) whether it would be better to buy an adjustable brake bias unit? Are the brakes diagonally split? (can't remember what the original pipes looked like

I want to keep the original rear drums, because they work well enough and look original

Next question

I have been looking at a few variations and options for servos and master cylinders.... what do people suggest? is there a direct fitting master cylinder that has decent bore size and fits the standard servo and doesn't give a spongy pedal.... what servo and master cylinder options are there... think crazy cage fitted a focus item recently but had to mod the inner wing to get it to fit? which i am not keen to do because of fresh paint

All suggestions are welcome want to get the brakes planned and bought this weekend....

Because i am using standard rst wheels the fronts are cosworth 4x4 calipers and 2wd disks.... are there any other (better) options when keeping standard wheels?

Thanks very much

Rob,

id have a bias valve, the screw type, not sure if would be better than a inline brake compensator but then its adjustable so you can have a little play with it and find the best front to rear bias to suit your needs and it can be adjusted when you go on track etc.

and on the actual brakes, id rebuild the calipers and use good discs and pads

i found that my standard caliper on brackets that moved them out to fit on the 2wd discs was better than the 4x4 caliper route and it's my car that we've put the newer servo etc on and does make the brakes a lot sharper and stronger the origional set up is diagonally split but i prefer front rear split

Rob the rear compensators work a treat ive had no need to fit a bias valve same as Daves

As for the servos and master cylinders im running 335mm front 4 pot ap and 300mm st170 rear disc and the standard stuff has been fine with good pedal feel.

Or reduce your rear 4x4 set up to a focus rear disk and caliper set up

Nice one mate, was just worried about the rear brakes not doing enough or doing too much as im sure the mk5 is a little heavier etc at the back. But tbh the inline compensators will save me a load of grief any how, as to run a bias valve i would need to remake the pipes to give a front/rear split opposed to the diagonal i currently have. How much were yours BTW? i still have the finis number you sorted for me but fords are closed by the time i get back from work

Last question!

What master cylinder do you lot suggest? would like to stick with the current servo/servo mount, my master leaks and im not sure its the correct bore either as the brakes have always been fairly spongy.

You won't reduce the pressure anymore, the setup is not balanced. Either goto a larger brake setup at the front, or a cheap option is to use sierra non cosworth rear discs and calipers which are a lot smaller. Another option is to cut a section of the pad material out so it has a lower surface area.

Cutting the pad wouldn't do very much mate, a smaller pad surface area means pressure exerted would be higher,

The sierra non vented option seems a good one tho. Or reduce line pressure to the back further.

Hi mate, a few questions

what master cyclinder are you planning to use ?

Did you need to change anything on the front after removing the abs? (i.e. brake lines etc)

Cheers

Dave

Haha cheers fella, for some reason i always remember who's car is who's, just not what you have both done.... probably because you always fab stuff for project etc....

Dave_s2

I will probably be using a standard master cylinder for the time being, got some standard S2 callipers as per projects suggestion with some spacers to fit cosworth 2wd disks (283mm), ABS removed and yes had to make up some lines effectively by passing the whole abs unit.

Hope that helps
