hi there ive jus recently bought an escort van fully resprayed in imperial blue and im just on with lowering the back end but obviously i need 2 do sumet with the arches so what can i do 2 em that will have the same effect as rolling them but without damaging the paint work?
would grinding it not heat the paint up and make it peel though?
Not if your carefull, i have never had a problem with paint when grinding arches i did however have a few cracks apear when arch enemy rolled my arches on my VR6. It wasnt there fault they do a great job its just one of those things.
I have also found you get abit more clearance grinding rather than rolling.
Myth!!warming the paint would give you more chance of damage, grinder would certainly stop the paint cracking as long as you keep it moving but remember that any metal without protection will rust almost literally overnight.good idea to mask off with a loadof masking tape ,lots of layers just incase the grinder slips as it would defeat the object otherwise!!
hmmm thanks ill have a think i just dont wanna fuk the paint cos it is literally show condition and the wheels that are going on it are 18inch focus rs wheels 215/35 tyres they look the tits next 2 it.
Warming the paint with a hot air gun softens it,does help prevent paint from cracking
cheeRS stu
You'd have to be mega careful though,I've got my own bodyshop and you'd be surprised how easily you can bubble up the laquer, especially if it's only recently been sprayed.

Hi mate, you'd certainly need to be careful but it wouldn't be beyond any ok bodyshop to put things right if it went wrong.paint does crack easily if it's deformed out of shape but using a grinder carefully won't harm, you'll only see the ground metal if you take the wheel off,you can brush paint inside the arch as it'll never be seen.
Grind the lip off and touch up the resulting bare metal.
U are kidding right lol or are u a butcher by trade!. I had mine done at x sport in basingstoke and he warmed the paint so it would be more flexable and not crack he used a proper arch rolling tool
And it's actuator is sat in my garage for some reason
Yeah thats another issue
As for warming the paint up, it should work, just be very very careful as if you get it too warm you will mark the paint. It's probably worth putting some masking tape around the lip first.

Think he was only suggesting it as the lad didn't want the paint to crack.if you've never done it before a grinder is a pretty safe option.I rolled them on my s1 before and never heated the paint and they worked fine,I made a load of cuts with a hacksaw first so as not to be bending one long length and it worked great.

Having done both numerous times no im not kidding he wanted to know a way of doing it without cracking the paint i gave him one. Ive had arches rolled by proffesional companys and tbh i have had better results getting the grinder out!
