Hi Guys

I have 2wd sierra cosworth, and the sump is leaking oil from the gasket, do i have to remove the subframe to remove the sump or can it be done with the subframe on the car. Also for the 2wd drive is it right that its cork, as i had a escort cosworth that was silicone sealed. Any info would be great.

The 2wd gaskets are a proper gasket like cork.The 4x4 cossies are silicone,

You could get a engine hoist to hold the engine and drop the sub frame.Or just take the engine out.These are easy enough to come out.Other people might have a better way of doing them.

 

Do you have a front strut brace ?, if so use this to take the weight of the engine with chains/straps etc, then just lower the subframe enough to allow clearance for the sump.
If the "leak" is on the nearside of the sump, have a REALLY good look at the oil pressure switch, as when these leak the oil shoots upwards all over the block, then drips down past the sump, and is easily mistaken for a leaking sump gasket.
The leak is from the switch itself not the threads, leaks between the plastic part and the outer metal part.

Thanks for replys, it seems to be from the sump its self the engine was re built before i got the car 3 months ago, and it looks like they have used both cork and sealant, thats why i thinks its leaking past the gasket.

i've got a cometic sump gasket & inlet gasket which wasnt used on my build. Ł25 posted

 

I did it with the engine in situ. Get the car up on stands then strap the engine to an overhead beam:

 

I used one of those beams that sits across the inner wings and dropped the crossmember. Next time I wont bother taking it out but just drop it a couple of inches as i think that might do it.

 

Have you sorted the oil leak yet then.
