Default Physio after a broken ankle

The hospital x-rayed my ankle, showed me how to drive a walking stick, and told me to come back in mid August.

Trouble is that I can't get my ankle to bend when I'm walking so it looks a bit comic (isn't very comfortable, though)

Is this something I just exercise my way through? Any tips?

If it needs professional help, I'll book some through my work healthcare, but don't want to sound like a fanny if I'm just being impatient.

if you didn't get any further info other than "come back in august" then i'd get some advice. you could find that in august you havent been stretching the right bits and then have to spend longer doing it again.

She told me to exercise the ankle by lifting and lowering the foot at the ankle, rotating the foot in circular motions, and swivelling it side to side. I was also to work up to raising on the balls of my feet while holding onto a chair, but these are all relatively ok.
The trouble is that although my foot will hinge down, but won't go up, like in a walking motion, and when I get someone to push it hurts. I've never had a broken bone before and managed to do three in one hit here, so I don't really know what is "normal" and what needs attention.

in that case personally i'd give it a month or two to "work"

a few mates have had physio in the past and its a long tedious process unfortunatly!
The thing to do is not overdo it, you'll do more harm than good.

Depending on any other damage apart from bones, you may not get full movement back, as simple as that, I still have restrictions in movement on my legs that were broke 27 years ago, and the ankle in particular is not a good one to break.

I'd use every bit of medical advice available to you if I were you (ie use you're work's medical insurance scheme too). I have many mates who always regret not going to a specailist physio for exercise tips when they were in plaster - they all seem to have reduced muscular strength and co-ordination because of it.

Tib, Fib and Talus - the full displaced trimalleolar fracture, but I don't think I did any ligament damage.

The muscle has wasted and I am SURE I can feel some of the screws and the plate!

I broke my ankle yesterday too so I've got all of this to look forward to I didn't think it would be bad but obviously it is, I haven't had physio for a very long time.

RSMAT - Jesus!

My leg didn't look like that when the accident happened, but it did swell up. I never saw it again till a week later by which time it had been operated on.
This is what it was like then:

There's a shorter incision on the inside of the ankle, and the plate and screws in my ankle DID set off the airport metal detector yesterday.

Paulo - you have my sympathy too mate. Before I did this I used to think that broken bones were something that kids got and almost kind of funny - certainly an excuse to rip the piss, but I know better now.

I was partially weight-bearing 37 days after the operation but even now at 49 days I'm not confident for any distance. I can't get a shoe on, so need to figure something out for that - wearing the aircast feels like a bit of a fraud now.

How come yours looks like that with only 6 screws? And what did you do to get it?

I stepped off a boat onto a floating jetty and landed on my arse. That won me a plate with 7 screws on the tib, and two big bastard screws in the fib. Talus was left to heal itself.

At least you got an interesting story - I have to concentrate on location to make mine cool.

Accident in Haiti, taken overnight to Jamaica and operated on when I got there, then flown home 5 days later.

Oh, and did I mention it was the first day ashore on our silver wedding anniversary cruise?

This was mine! ice skating of all things and not having the boot laced all the way to the top Fell over put my foot behind me to steady myself and fell on it........

Shattered the bone told me the bone would never heal properly due to the nature of the damage and that I would probably always have some pain from it, arthritis etc and bye bye!
Had very limited movement in it especially upwards to start with, but now I do Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu, Gym etc and its not too bad most days.

Both of you have more interesting stories than me More injuries though!

This was my attempt

I did mine running back from the ticket machine to put a parking ticket on the car, I hit a dodgy paving stone on the street and it kicked my foot out at an angle and went with a snap

I broke my(L) tib and fib, 4 fractures, exposed, left femur 3 places, right femur also 4 breaks just above knee, both ankles, 3 breaks in pelvis, 2 of which have not healed, right humerus(upper arm), bits were picked out the tree but couldn't be put back, now have fixed flexion movement rertriction, right clavicle, 3 ribs sternum, 2 spinal compressions,1 dislodged vertebrae, lump missing off brain front right side, hole in top of brain left ventricle, now have shogrens syndrome as a result, walk with a limp as left leg 1 1/2" shorter, was in hosp 19 months, first 3 in a coma on ventilator etc, now semi incontinent, have to take morphine drugs 4 times a day, otherwise can't get up.
I HAD NO PHYSIO at all from the hospital, despite being told I would never walk, but if I did somehow manage it wouldn't be unaided, was given a free wheelchair,(which I've given back), now walk on my own with just a limp, so I know what broken bones are like, and wish everyone the best with thier various ailments.
Just take more care, as it's possible to lose your life through a broken bone, my mate paul mallan did he broke his leg(his fault) cancer set in 18 months later he is dead, was a sound dude as well, just take care.
