Default Why don't dogs look where you point?

When I point at something like a biscuit on the floor my dog just looks at the end of my finger rather than where i'm pointing to.
Is it just that my dogs abit thick or is the case with all dogs?
Cheers Rich

Humans are the only animals that follow the line that you are pointing at. All others just look at your finger. It's something that humans have learnt.

actually when i feed our dog sometimes we give him dog biscuits as a mid day snack and most times he goes into his bed and we chuck them in his bed and he will eat them there, but as its been nice outside recently we leave the back door a jar for him to go out when he wants.
So i get the biscuits out and he jumps straight in his bed ready to eat them, but i point to the door to tell him to go outside and ill feed him there, he runs straight out the door.....................

But yeah if i just go up to him and point in the air he'd just look at the finger or just come up to me

It's the way you do it, if you make an arm movement in an 'away' gesture they know but if you just point at something theyll look at your finger. I've got a border collie known to be the most intelligent of breeds but even he will look at your finger when you point at something.

My Staffy just did this.
I was pointing at the river of a puddle making its way towrds the dogs backside as she lay sunbathing she soon worked out to move with a soggy behind
Ours doesn't run where you look either. If I shout 'whassat?' looking one way, she will dart off in a random direction at top speed to investigate

Ive had this problem the way to get round it , is point with your toes , or pretend to throw something near to where you want the dog to look , works everytime
