Default VW Golf GTi Mk4 Question

Why is it, that A mk4 golf GTi 1.8T that has more than 100k on the clock, is worth alot less than one with 90k on the clock.

Been looking at a few on Autotrader, and there is a massive difference in price between cars with sub 100k milages and those over 100k. Does the 1.8T explode at 101k or something?

Considering getting one when my time on the ship is up, purely so I don't have to get the train home But would rather buy a decent Mk3 rather than a Mk4 thats about to explode

Rab, just buy a fucking RS Turbo, you know you'll not be happy until your fixing one again!

They're bullet proof little motors. Pretty much the same motor in my 1.8T A4 and I've kicked the shit out of that for 40k miles and it's now on 132k, trackdays, fast road blats the lot

His choice was Cossie or Golf GTi. So I stand by that

My choice is golf gti or the train.............. I'm shopping at the bottom of the market.... Not a 7k minter

Davie, no...... I need something I can drive from the south coast of England back home. Besides, not digging too deep into the savings. I just don't fancy another winter of walking everywhere

They're pretty reliable as long as they've been maintained! my girlfriends 1.8t is on 128k i think and is still going strong. I've only had to change lower arms, front tyres and give it a oil service every now and again. One thing i don't like about hers is that it seems to have gained a few rattles and creaks inside now - compared to my audi, it sounds like the interior will fall to bits any second!

My mk4 Golf gti 1.8t is on 158k miles, run's perfect, pulls well in all gears. I make sure the car is reguarly serviced belts renewed on time. as instruted in the handbooks.
Recaro seats wear well with no rips.

Only mods are. Miltek exhaust, Forge DV, k&n filter and eibach springs.

Engine code on my Golf is AGU, which is known to have the better head for mods when going for big power.

Mate bought one from the auctions last year for 1650 and I drove it back for him.far better than the non blower model, quite thirsty I thought?there was a box/clutch problem with his so watch out for that(stiff to select) he was told it was diff and would cost Ł250 to sort locally.great handling and felt really solid,I liked it very much, don't seem to be many problems on the whole but like e36 beemers you want that temp guage not too move much at all, around 90 is fine but run it right up and work it too check all the fans etc.if you can afford the tdi is a really good choice got your sort of mileage.

Buy an Ibiza Cupra instead - cheaper and better looking but with comparible build quality and the same engine etc. Half leather, climate etc as standard too.

Contrary to vaughant's comments, the Golfs don't handle well standard. Bit like a boat so you might be right at home. And they aren't gutsy - I averaged 42mpg on a run to Edinburgh and back last summer. Usual avg was 34-36mpg.

Mileage shouldn't be an issue - my Ibiza was circa 100k and had ran 220bhp on a KO3s for most of it's days and it's was perfect.

Ive got one, its a w reg, agu engine code. Its done 147,000 miles, gets hammered everyday, mpg is around the 30 mark but if you drive it sensibly its around 38.
Its been lowered on coil overs so handles ok.

Good cars but defo need a re-map to get the best out of them.

fucking superb cars, i had one as family car for 6 months then sold it to my mum shes had it 2 years now, brilliant feel to them very solid tight, the sort of car you can help but hoon about and throw into the corners, very much impressed, coil packs are common but i bought one for my mums one other day and it was Ł27 bargain

Can't seem to find a Cupra for the money I was planning on spending. They start at about 2500 and go up. Golfs are starting at 1500...

I started out with a plan to spend 600 quid on a Mk3.....

42mpg?that's got to be a constant 56mph job,the non turbos are crap on fuel so I very much doubt that.I thought the handling was spot on personally, maybe not as good as the mk1 or mk2 but far better than the disgrace of a car that was the mk3,dosent deserve the gti badge those cars(obviously vr6 excluded). As said previously though, good car for the money IMHO with loads of potential.

Ive done 135k on my 1.8t, 85k of that has been with a stage2 map and all the goodies. Turbo is on its way out but it is the original, so cant really complain. Can easily get 40mpg on a run, but drops like a lead balloon if you even think about giving it some beans.

As above, good value, solid and handle shit. The worst handling golf ever. Make sure it has history and belts have been done when they should. Good cars

Brothers just bought a MK4 GT TDI Aniversary. Fucking cracking car. Got a hybrid turbo, milteck exhaust and something, re mapped to 200BHP and over 300FT/LBS of torque, pretty quick and even if you hammer the arse out of it, it still does 50MPG.

I agree though, it's not a throwable car, don't handle as well as my Escort and his has an adjustable ARB and HR coilovers.

They do get gear selection problems selecting 3rd gear though.

Pah! You went on about mine being a tank, and now you're after one!
Lets be honest a cossie would not have been reliable enough for work so the GTI was the correct decision for me. Had it been a question of a weekend car it would have been a cossie for me.

If its only a car for getting you home from down south, why must it be a mk4 GTI? Surely any car would do?

It doesn't need to be mate.... I just spotted how cheap they've become

So, thought i'd find out if they explode at 100k

If I had 7k to spend, I'd be looking at something else
