Default buying a saph cos 4x4

hi everyone.

im thinking of buying a 1993 saphire cosworth 4x4. it owned by some one who i work with and i know hes taken care of it. its done 88k, 300bhp and hes got a T34 to put on it. its got green injectors and other bits and bobs, original cassette sterio etc. its in good condition and at a very reasonable price.

i have had my mind set on owning a S1 and keeping it as an on-goin project but now im thinking of buying this saph. i was wondering, what are the drawbacks to owning a saph 4x4 cossie, if any????

Cheers, Dave

only draw backs are they are old, but not as old as a S1.....when i went from a S2 to a cossie it was like "this is a mans car".......providing u look after it (and dont get the "power" bug) it should/will be a mint everyday car

Draw backs are

you can't leave it anywhere
depending on your age insurance can be pricey
sourcing spare parts is getting difficult, particularly body panels
as said gets very expensive when you want big horsie power
I have to disagree with my colleague above, cosworths are not everyday cars imo, they are toys which are best used ocassionally

but all that aside they are cult cars and have an iconic status, they are very tuneable, fun to drive, deal with most things out on the road, no matter what people are driving they always want to have a go with a cosworth

do it you won't regret it

Just do it is my advice, still excellent cars despite being tractor drive(4wd) ha ha!!
No seriously 2wd at power is a hell of a lot more of a handful than 4wd.
So long as you're not going over around 350bhp or thereabouts won't break the bank, and servicing diy freindly, parts very reasoanble too.
My 2wd engine is in bits at the mo having clocked 200,937 miles on original bore/pistons/crank/shells etc, without a shadow of doubt they can be excellent daily drivers, IF set up correctly, mine was everyday driver returning over 40mpg on a run, but if modding I would set aside some money for mapping, I chose the alternate route of aftermarket ecu, and have never looked back, some just like to have bits for pub ammo, and pay over the odds for bits not needed.

awesome cars when going good, pain in the aRSe when broken!

I couldnt believe the difference in going from my S2 to 4x4 Saff in terms of comfort and how nice it was to drive in comparison.

Problem I have is, mine turned out to be a bit of a turd and put me off another for a while but been looking at a few recently. The term Cossie Paranoia is deffo true though lol, any rattle or noise and its uh oh!!

Sounds like a good car your being offered though mate.

None really but they are old now and as such with anything of age do require attention with minor niggles from time to time, also agree there not really everyday cars not as in they would not get you from A to B as they will do this all day long better than what most of modern stuff would, its a question of whether the car still be there to get you back from B to A.

They do make very good weekend cars/show cars.

Good Cosworth's are hard to come by now that haven't been messed around with and/or trashed and by the sounds of it the one you mention hasn't, sensible power as well.

sounds like a sweet car make sure she,s not covered in rust on the underside , they are notorious for it especially on the chassis rails ,you,ll love it coming from fwd escorts to a saph . I use mine everyday , but if it was completely mint and original car it could be seen as a bit criminal .If the opurtunity is there go for it mate

Maybe the dirt and the towbar on mine makes people think it's a std 1.6 with cossie bits, hope so sleep even better now, just use common sense where you park it, I find is the hardest bit to think about ie I always park it on it's own away from all the other cars, so obvious when anyones near it, that usually means slightly further to walk that's all.

well thanks for all your comments. very much appreciated. it is a car that I have always dreamed of owning and I know I would love it. I have already made up my mind that I am going to buy it, just thought i'd ask if there was anything inparticular that I should know about.

I intend to use the car often but not as a everyday-to work car. I will take very good care of it, and look after her (probably better than my missus) and drive her like ford intended it to be driven.

cheers guys
