Default Unknown YB Head

I need a little help please guys.

I've just bought a 2wd YB engine, complete with manifolds and inlet plenum etc. The engine mounts are definitely 2wd, the cam cover is red (and looks original), the oil filter is 2wd (ie not on a remote arm), yellow injectors, 2wd sump and 2wd manifold.

So far all is good, however....the head does not have the turbo damper lug on the side.

I was under the impression that all 2wd heads had the damper mount that juts out above the exhaust manifold? Am I wrong on this point? I have copied the casting numbers on the head and they are below. Can anyone identify the head from these for me please?

V92HF6090AA and YN1250 and COSCAST are all raised lettering on the front face of the block just below the cam pulleys.

Scratched/engraved into the same area is UB0251 - which I suspect was done by an engine builder/tuning company as the head has a sticker on the back face saying FER (Federation of Engine Remanufacturers). Does anyone recognize this scratched code/tuners marking?

is there an oil feed for the turbo on the head or is there any grinding marks where the damper bolt holes could of been ground off ??

Sounds like a 2WD bottom end with a 4x4 head.

I cannot see any evidence of grinding off the mounting. I did look earlier and the surface all around the head is the same with no marks.

The thermostat looks like a 2wd one I think but not sure how many bolts.

I was thinking it may b e a 4x4 or escy head. Would that mean the valves/pistons etc are also 4x4 or can they be mixed?

I'm still new on here or I'd put up a couple of pics

Can I send you a pic/email? I think it might have what you are talking about above and between the middle two exhaust ports?

Cheers

Maybe its been a remade head at some point, did these heads get remade like the 200 blocks did by cosworth, probably not the origional head that came with the car but i certainly wouldnt worry

Looking at the part number it looks like early escos head.
Not much difference in pistons, only really escos ones supplied now, these can be identified by a odd crescent shape part of the alloy skirt missing at the base of the piston, this is to clear the oil squirters as used on the escos.
Slight differences in CR, design between 2wd/4wd/escos but as said most are just escos these days as work in them all and only need to make one piston type that way.
Only modern overhaul bit you need to watch is the diabolical state of some of the oil pumps made these days, I've just got one, a good one out of a batch of 10, 4 were scrap, brand new never used!!

Ok, so I think we can safely say it's a 4x4 or Escos head. Apparently it was a running engine but I bought it off eBay so it cld be lies! lol I want to put it in a 2wd sapphire which has standard L6 ecu and engine wiring loom. I have a swirl pot, oil breather, 4x4 header tank and brand new hybrid T3 (cld be T34 tho as dont know how to tell the difference).
Question now then is what do I have to change/adapt/modify/fit to get it to work? ie I know I'll need the turbo damper on the cam cover but what else? As mentioned earlier there is possibly an oil feed by the turbo so do I need to do anything with that? Does that replace the old oil feed?
Was supposed to be a standard engine but I doubt it as the head is different, there are various blue silicon hoses around the fuel rail area and I think the dizzy looks different to my old 2wd one but cld be wrong. Cant post pics or that would probably help.
All help/advice is warmly received and appreciated as I really wanna bolt it in for end of June so dont have time to strip the engine down.

The 4wd supplies oil for the turbo from the cylinder head oil gallery on side of head, on the 2wd it is supplied via a fitting from the oil pressure switch housing end part, it has a hexagonal alloy extension in place of the oil pressure switch in the block, the other end of this is the thread for the oil pipe that goes to the turbo and also a drilled hole for the oil pressure switch to fit into as well.
Head will simply fit on, if the head has the oil feed, as it should halfway along the oil gallery on turbo side of head, you will see what looks like a tube/bulge running the complete length of the head front to rear on both sides, at the ends of the you will find a allen head blanking plug.
As I say halfway along the turbo side you will see it is machined to take a oil pipe, this then feeds oil to the turbo, this oil exits the bottom of the turbo and returns to the sump via metal tube and rubber pipe to fitting on sump.
I would fit the head with the YB1261 head gasket, basically escort cossie HG, the areas around the waterways are much better supported on the 4wd versions.
Fit with either new stretch head bolts or go ARP stud and nut kit, some prefer ARP some std headbolts, ARP for me.
When you come to the inlet gaskets etc if you use COMETIC they are re-useable.
You just treat the head the same as a 2wd head, thermostat apart as they are different, and the location of the temp sender for the temperature gauge, on the 4wd these are both in the same area which is at the rear of the head on nearside, whereas on 2wd the temp gauge sender is at front on offside, so you will need to sort the wire for this.
If on a 2wd exhaust manifold really needs a turbo support, 4wd one much shorter and unless going mental bhp may not need to bother with one.
The only difference with the dizzies is the cap, angled cap on 2wd straight on most 4wd but can be swapped around no bother.

Cheers for that mate. Dont know why they're so small, I'm not a pc guru unfortunately. Just trying to sort out a photobucket account now.

So do the pics confirm it is a 4x4 head? Or an escy head?

Bit hard to make out but looks 4wd, when the "flange" for the turbo damper is machined off it is very obvious that it has been there as the area is not nice and rounded like either side of where the flange was so it stands out a mile as a flat section.
