Default How long to wait before naming and shaming...

Long story short here...

  • Contacted a trader on here asking if he had any engines for sale
  • He replied and gave me a price and a mileage
  • Sale was agreed and delivery agreed for about 2 weeks time on Friday 21st May
  • Money was paid by Paypal and everything was fine
  • Friday 21st came, I waited in all day - no delivery
  • Sent e-mail asking why delivery hadn't happened and could I have tracking number and courier company details?
  • Reply was that the engine was in a "Central Hub" in Birmingham because it had leaked "hazardous fluids". Seller promised to sort it out ASAP.
  • No delivery or tracking information on the Saturday or Monday so I opened a Paypal dispute.
  • Seller complained saying his Paypal account was his business bank account and he couldn't trade until I closed the dispute.
  • I replied that i'd close the dispute when the engine was delivered...
  • Finally on Thursday I get sent a tracking number very late in the evening saying the engine would be delivered on the Friday.
  • Engine turns up on Friday 28th (a week later than it was meant to be delivered!)
  • I observe a number of damaged bits on the engine - cracked cambelt cover, damaged pipe on the power steering pump, lug broken off the inlet manifold and replaced with a self tapper etc. - as well as there being a pattern alternator and a lot of surface corrosion on the block and dipstick - all indicative of high mileage.
  • I contact seller to express my concerns and ask for confirmation of mileage.
  • Seller comes back and states a mileage higher than the one given in the original email and blames the courier for the damage.
  • I say that i'll keep it if he gives me a partial refund which he agrees to.
  • He tells me I need to close the dispute so that he can use his Paypal account to issue me the partial refund.
  • I closed the Paypal dispute early Friday evening and as yet haven't received the refund despite sending 2 reminder e-mails...
  • When I checked all the courier paperwork there was nothing to suggest the engine had been sent any earlier than Thursday 27th...
Now, as you can imagine, this has not been a particularly great experience with a trader on here...

How long do you think is an acceptable period of time to wait for this partial refund before naming and shaming?

If you bought a bare block and head then got the rest of it with it then that's not so bad, you can't really complain that the free bits weren't up to scratch. The delivery bit sucks but it happens. I would of collected it personally.
I wouldn't care too much about mileage as long as it works how it should.

What exactly have you asked of them?

Cut to the chase and say who it is, as said above thougjh, if it's someone who usually gets a good arse licking you'll find you are the one in the wrong.

Perhaps it's just a genuine oversight and a name and shame might just give that person the kick that they need.

The price was for a complete engine excluding exhaust manifold.

I paid £575.00 for it including delivery and i've asked for a partial refund of £75.00 to cover sorting out the damaged bits.

Mileage is only a couple of thousand miles different, but it was the fact that I was told there was only one engine in stock when I enquired and then he stated he sold 'that one' locally and sent me a different one...

Surely it would have been the 'done thing' to have sent me the one he'd sold me...

I wouldnt trust anyone regarding a old cosworth engine or by looking at it,or someone telling me say 50.000miles,doesnt matter a bit. Unless I done it myself.

1.put it down to experience and dont buy again from this seller, i know its shit but hey
2.if you feel you have been genuinly shafted then name and shame
3. contact trading standards for selling goods not as advertised, bit excessive but depends on how much £ you shelled out
id go with first one tbh as its sounds as tho your on to a loss either way, is it really worth the hassle but as i said depends on how much money involved

Precisely my point! I've always tried to be fair whenever i've dealt with people and losing a week between when delivery was agreed and when it occurred was an enormous inconvenience!

I accept that sometimes couriers do cock things up, but when I rang the courier company and quoted the reference number, they only had a record of it from Thursday 27th and said it was on a next day delivery. All of which suggests it wasn't even sent when the seller claimed it had been!

Just feels like i've been made a bit of a mug of...

Well

The PF Detectives strike again

Yes, it was www.RS-STspares.co.uk who supplied the engine.

i used to have the issue with couriers quite a lot that they would suspect oil is leaking out and stop the delivery and return it to my yard even if it was stopped at the local depot to the end address, so it does happen, and if a new consignment number was assinged to the package then yes they would only have a record of the new consignment number not the old one, doesnt sound suss to me at all,

how comes the sale and delivery date were 2 weeks apart?, as to getting no information on a saturday iam not that suprised really,

as to surface corrison it isnt a sign of anything other then being exposed to the weather as said above, i have engines from 2008 cars that have rust on the block,

and in regards to the damage, are you sure it wasnt delivery damage, seeing as it was sat in the couriers depot they are animals there, (i personally never send out panels on a friday as they will be sat in depot all weekend and more likey then not they get damaged), and did you sign for it without checking it?

not having a dig just a few points, nor am i defending anyone as i do not know them just know what it is like selling car parts long distance

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your post - i remember your line of work from the FFOC days

He wasn't able to provide me with ANY tracking details whatsoever until Thursday 27th. No carrier company, no tracking number, no phone number - just told me "it's a local company and I don't want you hassling them."

He told me that he hadn't taken the engine out of the car and he wanted 3-4 weeks delivery time, I told him I couldn't wait that long and it was agreed he'd work on a Sunday to remove the engine to make the 2 week delivery time.

The surface corrosion coupled with a pattern alternator made me suspect that perhaps the engine was higher mileage than i'd originally been told and when I checked this with him, he came back with a higher mileage than the one i'd been told at the point of sale.

I've received emails from him in the past over the weekend and late at night which makes me pretty sure he's seen my last attempts at communication with him...

As said - there are two sides to every story, but i'm just explaining mine...

thats pretty extreme lead time, i thought a day was bad and that was the max wetried ever worked to. the other side to the milage factor is he wouldnt know exactly what the milage was, he would only know the indicated milage from the car the engine is being removed from (whos to say that engine hadnt of been changed before with a 100k miler?), he should have mentioned that though,

in regards to naming and shaming i think you are right to do so in regards to not getting the refund back as he has gone back on his word by the sounds, and it sounds like the company might have a few issues to iron out

its not will as in big will is it?, now you mention ffoc the surname rings a bell

is the alternator not a common fault on ST's? hence the pattern part might save a future job but not condoning anything £75 is no big ask and the trader should be happy considering he messed you about and sold a different engine to the one promised to you good luck!!

The alterator issues just affect the ST225 engine don't they?
