Default Sierra RS Cosworth - Automatic gearbox?

Has anyone convert from manual to automatic?
What automatic gearbox can be used?
Any problems converting?
Thanks

I have appr 400 hp and I am tired of having problems shifting gears
I want to see if there is automatic gearbox I could use instead. It has to be strong and must be able to take 400 to 500 hp.
Isn't the T5 manual gearbox from Mustang? Cant I then use a automatic from Mustang? I just need to know which one?

you need a C4 auto, these are the same family as the ones behind the ford V8's and can be tricked up but only 3 speed
Belhousing will be a rare item from a 1970's granada / consul which is the only time fords put a pinto block on a C4 gearbox, apart from in the states they used them in the capri (think they were 2.3 though)

I have a 4speed auto on mine from a cosworth scorpio but only 230hp works great

Very true, it works great
I did convert from the boring T5 to C4. I found the bellhouse on e-bay, no problem. I bought a kit from Trans-Go and used manual valve body with Hurst shifter. It is just great in street racing and 1/4 mile. Did easily 12,7@108 on the track and it was just fun!!! It is 7,8 to 8,1 sec the 1/8 mile.
And the engine is still stock (inside) but it should be appr. 360 hp. I lost few miles on the top speed at the 1/4 mile track, i.e. from 112 mph to 108 mph, but we knew that as the auto takes a few hp more then the manual T5 does.
My next steps would have been 150 hp nitrous, but I sold the car right after the 1/4 mile race (no wonder...

nice one

Where did you get the bellhousing and what was if off of ??

Makes me laugh, people slag off autos then moan about broken halfshafts, diffs, bearings, wheelspin, heavy and burnt out clutches, missed gear changes, over revving, and the stupid wooshing of the dump valve on gear change

My anglia is auto and i did a shoot out on an airfield for a magazine article with 13 other anglias all shapes and sizes

Mine was Quickest 0-60 and 1/4 mile, and second fastest top speed ( my 4th gear wasnt working but is now)
There were two other cossie anglias, one came on a trailer and went home broken (gear lever ) The other broke (big ends) and went home on a recovery truck
Half of the remainder came on trailers or were towed cos they were highly geared.
I drove there and back in comfort through heavy traffic, no problems
still got the anglia axle but a LSD

Well they were avaliable new as Automatics, to be specific there was around 100 sent to a garage (Can't remember the name off hand) to be converted. I believe they used the mentioned C4 box.

And yes the T5 is indeed a Mustang box, but they are only 4 speed.

The bellhouse came from Ford Pinto in the early 70s. I ant remember where I bought it, just be e-bay. - Direct fit but I had to get another engine-starter, it is located on the right hand side in this bellhouse. One from Ford with the V8 Windsor.

There is quite a big difference racing on this setup, no more gear shift problems, no more lack of boost between gears, when wheel spinning it is very easy to go from 1st to 2nd and still on full boost wheel spinning well over 60 or 70 mph I did solve the boost controller problem by going to the automatic as now I am on full boost all the way, no hesitation or boost lak. Great if one likes to drift as well as drag- or street race.
This setup in the transmission made it very easy to shift gears very very quickly, and it only takes 0,? sec to shift gears, I could hardly feel the difference between the 1st and 2nd. And the Hurst shifter makes it possible to "bang" it into gears, but just one gear at the time. So, even the car is now automatic, it feels not like one driving it with this power, a 1:4,10 diff ration and fully manual valve body, you can get quite busy and it gives one a lot of fun!

For a genuine 400hp I would rather use the ford c6 it's a heavy duty version....especially for drag racing

Sure the C6 is much stronger, but also bigger and heavier. I am pretty sure it will not fit the Pinto bellhousing we are talking about. Also I am not sure I would try to fit C6 behind the Cosworth engine and in a Sierra body. There was not much space for working at the shifter and the fittings for the cooler tubes etc on the C4.
C4 is one of the most popular transmissions in drag racing for exactly lighter cars, like the Cossie, when upgrading it with stronger kits like the TransGo. Any way, it is working just fine in this car and setup.

My dad ran a c6 in a ford 100e with a 351 clevland drag car no probs with hard launches as the c4 couldn't handle it, we just ran custom braided rubber pipe for the cooler...
