Default FAO Dog Owners

Hi,

Me and Jenny really really want to get a dog, we've both had dogs before when we lived with our folks, but now that we're living together we want to get one of our own. We're gonna look at rescue dogs, as we can't afford a pedigree, and to be honest I like the idea of giving an unloved dog a new home

Now, my question is, how did you lot get over the problem of not leaving the dog on its own during the day?

I work full time and so does Jenny, but we both come home for lunch at 1-2. But i'm thinking this is stil too long to leave it on its own?

It would be on its own from 8.45am - 1pm, then 2pm - about 6pm.

I can't leave it with me mum as she already has two and works aswell, and there is no-one else i could ask.

My boss has his dog at work, which is a warehouse, so one option might be to ask him if I can take mine to work aswell, but whether or not he would let me do that I don't know. (its only me and him working there so it wouldn't be out of the question to ask as we get on well)

I would certainly take time off at the first stages of having the dog, but its after that time that concerns me, I don't see the point in having one if I can't look after it the way it should be looked after.

So what solutions did you come up with?

Any advice appreciated

am i right in thinking that you don't actually pay for a rescue dog? but make a donation to the kennels that have him?

i go to work at 9.45 get home bout 5.30

we got him from a place where he was ill treated so we had a few problems at first ie everytime we went out he would wee..
but he grew out of that now he just sleep's in the day
he looks in bad mood if you come home early

i dont think you will find anyway where the dog is not on his own durnin the day,
at least you will be popping home to see them every 4 hours.

It is normally a set price yes. Think our local rspca charge 80 also. That is all the injections the dog needs, being chipped and they chuck in pet insurance for 3 months.

My m8 brought his 12 week old staffy round yesterday and my cat attacked it lol but they got on fine after that. Im know considering one as there is always someone at home so thats a bonus.

well i don't know, not really fussy about breed etc as alot of rescues are cross aren't they?

One like yours Teresa would suit me down to the ground!

I've had rough collies, and bearded collies in the past and they were great but I want a playful short haired dog like a boxer cross, or maybe a lab cross, dunno really. I just wanna meet a few dogs and go from there, see what their characters are like mainly

Hi There

R.S.P.C.A. e t c most of these places will not at any cost let you have one of their dogs unless its not going to be on its on its owne for more than 4 hours..Ive recently been to my local one and they refuse point blank to give you a dog unless you only out 4 hours a day..They are less picky with cats apparently..So I would find out, they will state this most the time, its the same for a few others ive asked in..They will visit your home and ask a million questions e t c, you have to fill in forms to go look round the place. It says on the kennels what they need and what they cant have e t c..

Some dogs can be left but really 4 to 5 hours is enough, however I do think its a bit unfair because most of us do work and its not right that we cant have a dog!!!

Also it depends on what dog you have, some breeds are better left alone in the house than others, Some Staffies can distroy your house by eating it, some are ok..

The main breeds you see in rescue places are all the big dogs, Dobermans, rottweilers, collies because they are highly strung/springers,yappy terriers, alsations, People have them then freak when they find out how much attention they need, they are of course not all this way.

Dog flaps are cool if you have a small dog, say like Cat size!!! or something thats not going to be able to let a person through..

Having one from a puppy is better if you can handle it, then it gets used to your way of life, im getting one in the spring because although id love to rescue one, the dogs ive seen cant be left or no good with kids, or destructive etc, they are their for a reason..Some are genuinely good and have come from broken marriages or the owners die e t c..

Good luck, ive been checking the rescu places regulary..
