Hey everyone.
Well as some of you may no i am currently converting my car from standard mfi to cossie p8 as well and a few other things, it has been of the road for around 4 months and i have owned the car for about 7 months i think.
Basically my erst series 2 is my first proper turbo car i have only been driving for a little over a year and its my second car after a pug 106.
I have put in allot of money to the management change and i want to at some point give it a proper resto, at the moment i feel a little in over my head, the question i want to ask is
How did you all learn everything you know ? sometimes i look thought the rest topics and am blown away as well as confused by half the stuff on there I'm only 18 and i know i have a lot to learn and this site is great for that but i just wonder if you can just learn by trial and error and just giving it ago or did you go to collage/work in a garage etc... I am lucky to have muz around i learn alot of him but i know that i cant go to him for everything and somethings i have to and have learned on my own so yeah thats it really just feeling like theres so much to learn something i think " what am i doing i cant do this" lol
So how have you all learned all the car skills you know >?
thanks a lot conor

Always best to ask if your not sure mate as there are alot of kind and helpfull people on here and as they say the best way is to learn yourself. Also as far as cars go the escort rs turbo is a pretty basic and good car to get started on compared to alot of modern cars.
there is also a lot of shit talked on here! i learned by spending 12+ years in the trade and using common sense plus my experiance
the best bit of bullshit i heard on here is someone saying that a turbo works by sucking the exhaust gasses out of your engine quicker therefore making it faster because it can suck the gas out quicker meaning it can get more air and fuel in therefore making more power lol!!!!!!!

I knew fuck all when I bought my first erst,
and learned everything by trial and error and askin ppl that knew.
In the 6 years I've owned Rs turbos I have,
compleatly nut and bolt rebuilt my escort including the engine.
Rebuilt my frst and converted it to zvh.
All with a little research first.
That's what I love about these cars you can do most things yourself.
Nothing more pleasing than the doing it all yourself.
stick with it mate, plenty of times I had my car
in a pile of bits and thought " what the fuck am I doing I don't have a clue" lol

Just get stuck in mate, the more you do yourself the quicker you will learn, especially if you enjoy taking cars apart. Use the Haynes manual for mechanical stuff and mods/conversions you need to do lots of reading and use lots of different sources to give you an idea of what works and how to do it properly.
As said already just by reading on here alot, maybe taking the gamble and risk looking silly by asking the odd stupid question but hey- u dont ask you dont get and so if you dont ask those silly questions then you wont get the knowledge. I dont know anything mechanicaly, i couldnt rebuild a engine or set up the fuelling but i did strip my rs turbo then put it all into a different shell only getting help with the engine and drive shafts etc so rest of the car i knew exactly as i had took it off the last one.
when muz is around you mate you have no problems as he has made all the mistakes you can. Take his experiance and use it to your advantage.
Dont forget that you have us here at the end of the computer so what else could you possibly need.

All about experince mate, im only 23 and im still blown away by all the people on here. Few years ago i knew nothing and didt understand jack. But started learning by taking out a 1.6 engine on an old escort and just went from there. I have done head gasket on rover, gear box on frs, done all the pipe work on my skyline. But im still learning mate, alot of people on here are in ther 30s/40s/ so they got 10-20 years on us and imagine what you can learn in that time.
