smoking esco rs only downhill?

Default smoking esco rs only downhill?

i've got a strange problem..

my '89 escort doesn't smoke at all!!
but when i'm idling downhill he smokes a lott??
i'm currently running on 10w40 eurol but wanting tot change to 5w50 valvoline..

anyone??

Does it do it when first started as well, most likely will as it sounds like the valve stem seals which would be more noticable when you are on the over run as the vaccum is pulling oil past the seal and being burnt hence the smoke.

yes he smokes a bit when cold... but its like 10 degrees out here now (holland) so could be condens..

but i think you're explanation is right!
still really weird that he smokes only on a decline

Not really as I say the vaccum created on the over run (does not neccessarily have to be a hill) pulls oil past the valve and into the combustion chamber where it it burnt which results in blue smoke. The reason I said about it doing it on start up is when left a similar thing happens the oil leaks past that valve and into the cylinder hence when you start up you see a puff of smoke inicially. If you give it a bit of stick and let off throttle it would probably do same thing.
