I have just installed the bass box in the boot of the saff now where is the best position speaker side on or facing the back or facing the front? Also how do you set one up, it has DB gain, frequency gain? and volume is it?

Phil - doesn't matter. Bass isn't directional, so it doesn't matter which way it faces.
As for set up, if you REALLY want it to sound it's best, then take it to a decent car audio store and have them set it up with a test CD, so the frequency cut off and crossover and be calibrated. If you don't want to go that indept, then just set it up with your own ears - at the end of the day, it's YOU that will be listening and everyones tastes are different. So a bit of trial and error with some music you really know well (more than one CD here Phil; what sounds good on one record might not sound good on another) and set it the way you think it sounds best to you.

Doesn't matter which way it faces as low freq sound waves travel through anything.
If you set up for low pass filter on your headunit to about 60hz, that will cut out the low frequencies to the speakers, then set the sub amp to 60hz, that will then play whatever is below 60. Have a play around with different settings until you get what sounds right for your music and your ears, as they are all different.

Starting point for x-over frequency should be 80Hz i.e. bottom two octaves of the audible frequency range.
Tell us what the actual labels on the knobs are. I would expect things like:
LPF Freq
HPF Freq
X-Over Freq
Crossover Freq
Input Gain
Input Level
Volume
and possibly
EQ Freq
EQ Gain
Bass Boost Freq
Bass Boost Level
that sort of stuff. If only they actually labelled things accurately it'd make life so much easier...
As mentioned, it really doesn't matter which way it faces. If it's ported, have the port facing away from any solid barriers. That is all.
