Default Saxo VTR?

Alright fellas,

Call me mad, but I'm thinking of getting rid of the Megane and getting a cheap run about, I fancy a VTR

Any common problems, stuff to look out for? They can be picked up pretty cheap these days, just want something I don't give a shit about to thrash round, only wanna spend £2k tops, not fussed about speed, or the chav image they have, but just want a clean(ish) standard one.

Am I insane? The Meg is a bit of a waste as I hardly do any mileage any more, and want something I can chuck my mountain bike gear in.

Great little cars, i dont see why you would need to be mad to buy one, VTS obviously a better option engine wise though.

Superb little motors and loads of fun. Would do better with a VTS mind. Only real issues is the image thanks to the Max Power inbreds and crap interior quality

Is the 16V a better lump then? I know it has more power, but I'm really not fussed about it being quick as long as it's cheap and reliable.

I've had several Saxo's, ranging from standard VTRs to tuned VTS'. Personally I don't like the way the 16 valvers drive, as with most small capacity twin cam engines you have to rev them hard to get anywhere, where as in comparsion the 8 valve VTR feels a lot nippier and pulls a lot lower down due to the nature of the engine which around town is much better IMO.

I have a VTR now as a runaround as they are great cars but if I were you I'd test drive both.

Mate had one, nippy enough I think remember something about checking the cooling fans work as fan switches are prone to failure may be wrong.

Never had any problems with his although handling was not the best.

Sure it's from 2000 onward (Facelift) that had +10HP (100HP) opposed to 90HP which earlier models had, there as fast if not faster and better equipped IMO (Discs all round) compared to the equivalent Zetec S.

Only problem i ever found when driving my mates VTR (apart from the pink steering wheel cover she has in there!!) is the pedals are so stupidly close together! Did anyone else find this, or is it just me?!

Nice one lads, I was expecting a barrage of abuse and people saying they're made out of plastic and will fall to bits in 5 minutes.

VTR will be a bit cheaper to insure, as the whole point is to save money and still have a car that I can chuck around if I feel the urge!

You can get a half decent looking one for £1600, was gonna go for another Zetec S, but they seem to be holidng their prices better at the moment than Paxos.

Oh and yeah, I have driven a few VTR's before, I'm 6ft 3 and the pedals are pretty close together, but soon get used to it, leg room isn't great either, but I can live with that as I won't do many long trips in it.

You get used to it after awhile and it seems normal but yes they are close! I'm 6'3 with size 10/11.

I asked nearly the same question last week or something but on the VTS. I decided against one though cause of thier size. I do alot of mountain biking and skiing, moutain biking is with DH bikes though so quite large and just couldnt be bothered with the hassel of getting the bikes in.

I learnt to drive in a 106, same sorta size, you wont be chucking your moutain bike in unless its quite small!

Driven the VTR and VTS. I hate saxos but i have to say the VTS performance blew me away for a 1.6, it was suprisingly quick. The VTR will have you always wanting that bit more. The engine mounts go on these, the one under the ecu in the engine bay, common fault

+1^^ i struggled when first drvin me bros car lol.

On his 1st one he had probs with the gearbox and they kept braking or not workin properly (had bout 8 lol). His new one he has no probs with gearbox so far and has bin ok and has caused any major probs.

I drive a focus at moment so used to better interior and ride comfort, but thats wot you get when its slammed. He has prob wit drive shaft at moment, but you get probs wit all cars!!

Other than that they are a nippy car and rev easily and faster enuff to beat most general cars (if thats want u want)

ive got a vtr as a daily drive while i save for a cozzy and i love it. its blue lowered 50mm on 106 ralle steelies and i cant stop smiling when i drive it. i had a 205gti for a few weeks after i sold my nissan 200 then i got this saxo and cash for my 205 which i was suprised about as the saxo does everything better. was going to drop a vts lump in but all my spare cash is going towards a cozzy.
will still keep the saxo as a daily as it costs very little in petrol.
