People keep going on about Virgin (cable) having traffic shaping etc, but I've never really noticed my internet going slow. Maybe my downloads slow a bit if I run them during the day, but on websites I've really not noticed it...

I'm with Sky and they're spot on, always have been. Never slows down as far as I can tell, but I pay for the top package but even so that's only Ł15 a month.
Were on talk talk (aka tiscali) My torrent's are running 24/7 i try not to run from 3pm till 7pm if i have to download any film.
On the connection we have via phone line i'm getting around 550kbs-650kbs for downloading, not sure if it's because i'm on a private site?
Have run it with a torrent running at 5pm and it does go slow, only if the seeds on the film are high.

You don't have to go with virgin to avoid traffic shaping, you need to find a provider who offers an LLU service. Check your exchange at samknows.com.

Well perhaps because....
1. You have no idea where i live and...
2. Your not a BT openreach engineer...
And your victim you've picked on 1. Knows where i live and 2. Has been one for 10years. So have one of these..
It's not like i bought my cossie off him or anything........... O wait hang on............

I will never move into another house that does not have cable internet access!
how far do you live from your telephone exchange? distance is the only reason the line will make your connection slow unless the line is faulty (yes it can be faulty and the phone still be ok) if you are close to the exchange and getting low speed get hold of your service provider and tell them they should send an engineer to do a healthcheck, also if you have a proper master socket (the one where the bottom half will unscrew) remove this if you have hardwired extensions and test from the socket you find behind the plate, you will be surprised how many people have slow speeds due to poor or incorrect internal wiring.

2, i dont need to be an engineer to know that 80ping is not very good
so thanks for the
but its really not needed in this case

My ping is usually around 87ms when i do checks online too, which really spoils playing games like Call Of Duty online with the PS3.
I only have a master socket in the house, no extensions etc, the PS3 is hard wired to the router but we use wifi for laptops etc.
What sort of cost would i be looking at to have a BT engineer pop round and do a few checks?
If I use the AA Route Planner website, it says my house is 3.18 miles from the exchange, is this classed as far away?

Ben not sure if you know or not but you need to make sure interleaving is turned off, can lower your ping quite abit but sometimes makes the line abit more unstable i know alot of people who have done this with BT so worth a shot
