what do you guys think?

symptoms...when driving at say 60mph or so..then accelerate hard...the car starts to accelerate,then seems to hold back for say 1 to 2 seconds.then clears..accelerates and holds back again etc.its not violant its as though say your applying the brakes and then releasing them.If i feather the throttle off it gains acceleration again.If i acclerate gradually instead of foot to the floor its ok.
im thinking of trying a fuel filter first but also does anyone know if the filter attached to the pump can be physically removed to be cleaned?
oh..some info...cars done 31,000 miles bluefin air filter.
i'm blaming the missus for letting it get low on fuel.lol..

The behaviour does sound like a lean hesitation and i've personally seen 3 or 4 ST170s with fuel pump faults. For what it's worth i'd certainley get a more accurate diagnosis, it needs the fuelling monitoring under load to confirm it is a leaning out problem.

Filter is relatively easy to change and not expensive, pump is more like £100 territory.

Certainly sounds like a fuel supply issue! Pumps more common than most to fail on the st170, but as will said, get it confirmed first!

 

Try nearer £200. Think I was quoted about £170 but I was getting quite a bit of discount.

Mine had the same symptoms but turned out to be a faulty FPCM. £60 for the part in the end. Get it on a diagnostic machine to be sure.

Fuel pump my arse.

Its more likely to be ignition related, sounds like what mine did - I'd check the leads and coil pack first.

I replaced both and it solved the problem.

And the plugs for good measure.

If you accelerate foot to the floor the car may over fuel as thats when FTE happens (full throttle enrichment)

 

hi guys sorry i forgot to post up what happened.i bit the bullet and bought a new pump from ford.when i removed the old pump the filters on the bottom and inside were absoloutely solid with shit and gunk.they were that bad that i was suprised the car ran at all..honestly.
so fitted new pump and car sorted and obvoiusly runs great.ive cleaned the filters on the old pump and am confident that was the only thing causing the hesitstion.
so in conclusion just fit a new pump or if your skint clean the pump filters,i know its hassle removing the tank ,but if you save £200 its gotta be worth it.
