Default 5th Gear on a S2 RS Turbo

Need some help/info. What would cause 5th gear on a S2 RS Turbo not to go into 5th gear?? When you put it in 5th gear it makes that horrible noise like when you go into reverse gear and you hear that streching noise. How do you fix it when 5th gear wont work??

Ok mate ideally I would like to keep my original gearbox. Is it an easy fix or a big job? What about cost for fixing a MK4 S2 RS Turbo gearbox??

it's an easy fix for a transmission company, bet it'll only take an hour or two to sort it.
minimal expense, whilst their at it, they can inspect the box for wear.
ring around a few local companies and decide on a time scale for the box to be sorted, just so they can get on it as soon as it gets there and back to you faster.

ive rebult a bc box before and the hardest part was getting 5th gear off the shaft took 3 of us last time

mine wouldnt go into 5th and it turned out the diff bearing had collapsed not saying it has on yours speedo had also stopped working at the same time as the diff had moved in the casing and the speedo drive was no longer touching the drive gear

Yeah I could probably imagine the amount of effort involved. Does anybody know anywhere in Scotland I could take it?? I think my diff bearing is ok cos my speedo is working fine. I tested my Series 2 on a track (not public road) and in 4th gear it can hit speeds of 120mph and thats me not into 5th gear yet. When I get 5th gear fixed what speed do you reckon the car will hit with 5th gear working? Its been chipped, full stainless steel exhaut system, magnicor performance leads, i think the engine is forged as well.

Cheers mate. Wasnt sure about it being forged but I thought it might have been. I'll put a post up on strathy and see if someone can point me in the right direction for getting it fixed. It's a bit of main not being able to use 5th gear. A guy I knew a few years ago used to help me a lot with car stuff but he's away from it all now.

Fifth gear synchro (if thats the problem) is fairly easy to change and does not require the removal/stripping of the gearbox casings. You can get to fifth gear by removing the 10mm bolts/end cover from the gearbox. You wont have to remove the 5th gear from the input shaft (the difficult one that oftern requires a puller).

Heres a pic of 5th gear from when i rebuilt my box...

More pics of the stripdown & rebuild can be seen here...

If you're handy, you don't even need to remove the gearbox from the car.
