As said pump timing is crucial on these. Also depending on what pump you have you can increase the pressure a tad.
They arent fast never will be, unless you got a turbo one.
But one thing to make sure is that the cambelts are changed every 30k minimum.

had a few as work vans for years..slowest machine ever i think altho it would regularly read 100mph on the speedo..going downhill i should add ha..one of the lads turned up the fuel pressure (or something like that) and it was much better..used quite a bit diesel and coughed loads of shit out the back though

I had one for a work van a few years ago.
It was reliable but traveling with the back full of tools and ladders on the roof, would be lucky to do over 65 mph. At least you will not get caught speeding.

mine was rediculously slow, regardless of when it had been serviced
mine also managed to go even slower when the downpipe started to blow, then it struggled up hills even without anything in the back!

i have had loads of these probably so many i can't remember and i have had them made to go slow,i also have had them goverened and that a pain the arsehole i can tell ya but it does make them more economical and i regularly saw around 55 mpg out of a old ezzie diesel van. my mate just bought a genuine 75k miler for 500 notes w reg with sierra cos 15" wheels,xr3i wing back seats and a few other touches, you can't go wrong cos they don't go wrong if you service them, i have never known a pump fuck up,the boxes are tough as old boots infact its rust that have been the main problems and check for breathing,if you take the oil cap off when its running and its smoking like a chimney the rings are fooked and back pressuring hence not much waft. They are harder too start when that happens but once running they still go all day.

My friend's dad is a courier and his had done over 400,000 miles on its original engine, gearbox packed in so he bought another newer van and kept the old one for spares!
