Has it lost power, is it able to climb above 4/5k revs?

Unplug the air flow meter then take it for a drive. This will bring the engine management light on but see if it improves. To turn the light off again disconnect the neg lead off the battery for half an hour.

All you need to do clear the ecu is pull the violet 2 map fuse marked KAM, for a few minutes.
I would look at emissions for a clue first.

it just got mot'd at the start of the month and passed the emissions no bother, but in fairness its got worse since then.

her last focus was a 1.8, similar fault with no codes, i ended up replacing lambda sensor, afm, and idle valve, it did have sticky revs tho and a lot more miles on it.

ill get it into the garage and get the emissions checked again
