Default 1997 escort gti emissions fail! is it likely to be lambda sensor?

just took my 1997 5 door escort gti for its mot, new it was gonna fail as it needs a bit of welding but get a free re test so thought id see what else it needs before work commences lol,

well it failed the emissions and the tester said it could need a new lambda sensor causing high emissions! and also the car if
dle really lumpy then smooth then lumpy on and off all the time?

before i just buy and fit a new sensor is there any other common faults on these that could be the cause to check as well?

thanks marc

when was the last time the air filter was changed?? air filter can cause problems and yes also the lambda sensor! had this myself!

also get it red hot before you take it in..having it boiling hot helps it go through too

disconnect the maf, if the idle runs ok then change that.

If not the idle control valve could do with a clean.

As caz says change the filter or add one lol as this makes a difference, as for the lambda buy one from the scrappy for a £10 and they that before you retest.

got a second hand lambda for £12, will fit the new air filter as well and a new thermostat as the cars not getting up to temp properly so gonna do that for the sake of a few quid too,

as for the idle, disconecting the MAF does nothing so i will give the iscv a good clean up and re fit

thats the easy bit, gotta deal with this little lot after that

complete new rear chassis sections for both sides turned up today tho so a busy Saturday ahead
