Megasquirt ECU or similar ECU
Hi,First question, is it worth replacin ECU with something like Megasquirt or similar if im not running Throttle bodies? Iv herd you can get good gains as std ECU is bit restricted.If it is worth it, then as im not that technical with this sort of thing i would need this to be fitted for me.So my questions are:How much would the kit cost me? How much to fit/set up?Any idea on gains? (iv got 1.8 blacktop focus, with 4-2-1 manifold and catback and induction kit, also possibly fitting cams/pulleys)From what iv read the kit can adjust itself so when cruising it doesnt use loads of fuel, but generally is there a massive effect on fuel economy?I had loads of quests but forgot them now.So if you can suggest anything else i might need to know i would be grateful.CheersMatt
it willl need to be set up to no what fuel to put where and any specific load point unless you mean closed loop control??

cheers for reply m8.Im not that technical with this sort of thing. Its just i spoke to someone who said something about limited gains on std ecu and suggested megasquirt or something similar.So just want to know pros/cons and costs and gains to see if its worth itCheers againMatt
I would add up the likely total cost first if I were you, as no aftermarket ecu and set up will leave you with a small bill!!
The std ecu if adjusted/mapped right if possible will do the job just as well.
I would forget about closed loop, if it mapped correctly it is not needed.
If you intend to do more mods such as cams/tb's/turbo etc down the line then a good approach if you can afford it is to get everything done, then set up, as otherwise it will need a new set up with any major change.
Aftermarket ecu's tend to be much more useful in tuning as unless someone has the identical chip for the mods you want you are stuck.

Well i want be doing any more mods after the cams, so it shudnt need to be mapped again. Its jus i dont want be payin £200-£300 for custom remap for limited gains, wen for £900+ i can get worthwhile gains.

With such a lightly modded engine I doubt the gains will justify the cost with going aftermarket.
but that said, its a great way to future proof your engine as it makes it so easy to add TBs or a turbo or a supercharger or whatever at a later date if you are already on aftermarket anyway.

Not sure if i wud turbo/supercharge my car, but did think about TB's.
So if i just keep my current mods (exhaust/induction/cams) is it better to just get std ecu mapped (if possible to do properly)

I wouldnt bother getting the standard ecu mapped no, I would either leave it standard (it should cope "ok" with those mods) or go straight to aftermarket now
As per what Clarke says, Mtech have a lot of experience with their V4 ECU on the Zetec engines, so are a good person to talk to, in their group buy they are doing its only about 495+VAT IIRC including some mapping, all you have to do is make the loom up.

If you can send us your old engine loom I have can my autolec custom link everything together, PM me for a price.
Your right on the price, mapping is currently half price with that group deal, so would be £125+VAT for your car.
gains, well dopn;t expect much but as others have said here its futurproofing. The ECU will handle anything you're likely to throw at it, wether it abe a set of cams or transplanting an RB26DETT from a skyline (in all seriousness Im on the hunt for a granny coloured Mk2 fiesta to fit said engine too....)
