my son has bought a mk1 1.1 fiesta, he paid Ł900 for it and its absolutly mint. the insurance is notified about loweing springs, dampers, wheels and uprated brakes and third party Ł1040 a year. and it does about 45mpg :P
The tragic thing with young men on insurance is the reason the premions are so high is tragicly statistics show they are more likely to crash its about 40% higher and the reasons the premioms are so high is to scare people off as they dont want to insure you as your are not seen as a profitable risk
your best bet is to get a quote with as lower milleage as possible with out being to cheeky
stick to a car that is common enogth for parts but not so common is a stereo typical car such as a fiesta or nova as these will cost you more to insurer
the only thing i can say is go for an old cheep car that you could afford to lose the amount its worth a couple of hundred quid say
only get third party cover
drive it around for a year and then start to look at a better car to replace it once you have a years no claims
and even though only tpft cover if you were to have a non fault accident you can always claim via a credit hire company or solicitor who willclaim your costs and losses back from the at fault drivers insurance company

as a new driver 2 years ago i used Quinn direct, a 1.8 diesel 205 cost me 400 as a learner, then when i passed and bought a MK5 escort 1.4 they charged me just over 700 quid, but i wont use them any more they seem to only specialise in new and young drivers
