Default What would cause a 2wd Cosworth to run hot?

My saff seems to run very hot, as the temp gauge sits on the 'N' of 'NORMAL' when driving along. When stood still, it very easily boils over and loses a lot of water. The fans DO cut in, just below the red on the gauge.

So far i have tried:

Done a 'Sniff' test with came up ok
New thermostat
New Fan Switch
Flushed the system through with a good cleaner
Header Tank cap
Bypassed the water cooling on the T3 Turbo (which did drop it a little)

only thing i can really think of is maybe the rad is blocked?

any ideas to try would be great

I had a blocked rad showing similar signs, I reverse flushed it and it solved all my issues.

saying that I would agree above, I would try the water pump

yeah, havent tried the water pump actually, but i know its working as i took the hoses off and flushed it through with clean water with the engine running, and the pump was chucking out loads of water from the 90 degree elbow.

when you say 'reverse flush' do you mean top to bottom, or bottom to top?

Thanks

have you changed the gauge sender? maybe its running just fine and the gauge is wrong

there are various resistance sensors out there and people sometimes use the wrong one

***edit. ignore me just read it boils over lol***

are the fans wired up the right way? ive seem them wrong before!

James: i think they are wired correctly, doesnt look like the plug/loom has been touched. looking at fans, should they turn clockwise?

Silly question, are the fans wired the correct way? If not they'll be going the wrong way round

as James above mate

pretty sure they are the right way around.

but this wouldnt effect the cooling whilst moving around though would it? as the needle sits on the 'n' of 'normal' even on motorways.

oh and as james said its worth changing your gauge sender in the head as these over time do make your gauge in the dash read higher or lower over time!

Even tho this clearly wont solve your boiling over problem

it will if the fans have kicked in before you got your speed up because the fans will be fighting with the air coming through from the moving car.

just make sure the when the fans are on the air is traverling towards the engine and not blowing out through the bumper

also another thing to check.
when the temp is up feel the rad to see if its the correct temp top and bottom and feel all pipes to make sure you do have a cold pipe

Sorry mate didn't see that

No but I thought you said its fine driving round, but boils over when sat still?

Do you have a SECS monitor? As this will tell you exact temp of the coolant, and after fitting an uprated rad fan switch to my standard rad, fans cut in at 94deg

Right, update

Completely flushed the sytem, no difference.

removed the stat completely, just takes longer to warm up, and runs cooler when moving, but as soon as you stop, the gauge raises quite quickly, and the fans come on when the needle hits the bottom of the red! (fans are blowing towards engine)

Rad feels very even heat wise all over.

im suspecting head gasket or maybe cracked head?

i would change the rad, sometimes the fins get clogged with scale & shite, the water flows through the rad but dosn't cool the water enough, the rad loses efficiency with age as it get build up inside it.
