Default Where do i stand with this issue.

2 yrs ago i had an issue with my cosworth where the waste gate arm snapped on the turbo.. while that was off i decided to have the head gasket changed to sure things up a bit.

i had the work done at the ford garage where i work and everything seemed fine.

i have hardly used the car since (less than 2k miles) but had noticed that i had a slight drip of water down the side of the block.

to investigate i had the exhaust manifold removed to see if cahnging the core plugs would solve the issue, when the mechanic removed the manifold water came out of one of the stud holes!!!

he thought the head was cracked but after removing it it is evident that when work replaced the head gasket and refitted the turbo someone has helicoiled the thread and gone throught into the water jacket!

it has not become evident as there has only been a slight drip as the stud has stopped most of the water.

I am now left with a damaged head that prob cant be fixed and the cost of replacing the head gasket due to the fault of the garage.

the issue is the work was done 2 yrs ago (still have bill for car etc) and is obviously out of warranty.

where would i stand as it is evident that the original job however long ago it was done was not completed correctly and the helicoiling has damaged the head?!

Many thanks

Phil

You could have heli'd it yourself then gone back after messing up.

That is how they will see it and will probably just tell you to go fish. You'll struggle to prove that after 2 years it was indeed their workmanship that caused the issue.

have spoken to them but not sure what will happen just really pissed off that i know the damage was done then, and there have been no symptoms until now.

Cant see you getting anywhere.

Personally I would use plenty of Loctite liquid PTFE on the stud and the hole to get a seal with the stud in place. Nothing to lose trying?

surely the hole can be welded up and the re-drilled and tapped or helicoiled again?!

Ive used chemical metal quite successfully on a Zetec Turbo that leaked oil past an exhaust stud.

looks like i will have to try either welding the hole up or using liquid metal on there havent got the money to be buying a new head at this time of year. hopefully that will do the job. like you say nothing to loose!

The garage will tell you to stick it! Even if you went back the next week I doubt they'd do anything about it.

The 'liquid metal' option is IMO the best bet, and will probably put an end to the problem.
