Thinking of buying and EsCos
As there seem to be quite a few owners on here. Im after some advice.
Whats the most common things that fail on Escort Cossies (small turbos) I am only thinking about running the car upto 280 bhp or so as this is the limit of the Small turbo.
How much would a rebuild cost after time and miles, whats the ussual cost of replacing the turbo ? and other costly things at can fail and need replacing after time ?
Thanks.
Matt.

From: Macclesfield - you'll never leave....!
brakes - 150 quid / corner average - inc pads&disks
engine rebuild - 3000
gearox recon 600
turbo 400
all roughly .
brakes and tryes are the main expense though.

at brakes.
They do go often, but £150 front set inc discs & pads (good ones) and the same for rears from me
The rest is about right.
Apart from obvious costs of 280bhp, I have had
Turbo (f*cked it running high boost)
Engine mounts (broke)
ECU (frazzled)
TPS (frazzled by ECU)
Services (as any other car)
Tyres (punctures and highspeed cornering)
Bushes (generally worn out + I wanted poly ones anyway)
I'd say running costs were on par with Sierra cossies etc, just that electrics are different, hence dearer prices to fix.

A mate of mine had a small turbo escort, when he sold it it had done 175.000 mileswith no major problems. no engine build no head gasket or gearbox. the car was standard and well looked after.
Well from my point of view, my Escort Cossie is my hobbie. It’s an every day car, and does approximately 105 miles a day. There’s always something to be done, upgrade this, upgrade that, not enough horsepower etc. I thought I could be happy with Stage 1 (280 BHP) but have ended up with 380 BHP plus big brakes etc. (You’ll always seem to want more.) It’s a driver’s car, and as such should be driven. (As opposed to a poser’s car.) Track days take some more out of the car, tyres, pads etc. So it all depends on how you drive it, and what you are looking for out of the car.
What is your on-road/in service ratio? You really manage with it as your everyday car? I wonder because I have only my Cossie now and I drive borrowed cars all the time to get my things done.
Well, I’m lucky enough to have a spare car, for when the Cossie needs things done to it. (Golf VR6 with 17 OZ’s AVO’s Full Stainless Steel exhaust including lovely six into one tubular header manifold.) I’m also lucky that I have a huge double garage, which is well equipped with everything from lifting crane to pillar drill press to air tool wrenches to help in the speed of work that needs to be carried out. All work done on my Cossie is carried out by me, unless specialist machining/mapping is required, that I don’t have the tools for. On road/in service ratio……… well drove it for three years with no real expense and no off road time, then upgraded to 380 BHP with brakes etc. £8000 and 3 months later I have my car. Cheers John
