Shove 3k in a Cash ISA you wont pay tax on it, can chuck a further 3k in in April. Dunno if your married or with partner etc but if so thats £12k taken care of! Accesable when ever you need it. Everyone should have an ISA for savings!!!
Deals vary so be sure to see who has the best deal on offer!

ON the remainder remember to check whether interest is paid monthly or yearly.....suppose it all depends how long you are prepaired to tie your cash up for if at all as to whats best for you!

As a general rule of thumb an IFA will recomend that you have 3times your monthly expenditure within easy access, the remainder all depends on your future asperations.

ISA's are made up of different components;

Maxi ISA(Managed Funds, Stocks&Shares) £7k each financial tax year.

or

Mini ISA's 3 different options

Mini Cash £3keach each financial Tax year
Insurance ISA (to be discontinued 2005) £1k each financial Tax year
Stocks & Shares (Manages Funds, Fixed Interest Funds etc) £3k

as the insurance element is being dropped in 2005 £4k can be invested in a mini Stocks & SHares ISA.

****Note If you hold a partialy funded Maxi ISA in any given tax year, you are not entitled to a mini ISA*****

Yep Premium Bonds are what he is on about. You get the forms from the Post Office. You can have up to 20,000pounds at last count. They have a draw once a month with the maximum prize of 1million pounds. Prizes right down to 50pounds. I had 500pounds worth of the bonds and won a couple of 50's.

You can cash them in anytime and get them back so not bad at all.
