Default My abscence of late

I have not been about much lately, I apologise for this but one of my dogs has been extremely ill and I have been pre occupied visiting vets and taking her to the dogs equivalent of A and E where they managed to revive her.

2 k later and a trip to Coventry we now have the answer, she has a faulty heart valve known as mitral valve stenosis which in humans is operable but in anamals it isn't.Apparently she was born with this and it is very rare in jack russels and dogs rarely live beyond 2.5 years she is now 5.5 and has shown no signs of illness up until this last 3 months, she has been given 18 months to live and is on numerous expensive heart pills and meds.
Very sad times indeed devasted does not describe how I feel
My kids are aware of her illness but I haven't told them how long they have given her

Sad news tony my uncle had a german shepard with one of the tubes going into the heart the thickness of a straw meant to be 3 times thinker she lasted 8 years when she was only meant to last 3.She was on beta blocker type tablets. So i hope the little soul is ok with the tablets & is going to be comfortable

Sorry to hear that, bloody worst thing about pets they're just like family but don't live long enough!
Suppose on the positive side she's ok now for the time being (atleast you know), she might die young, but hopefully you'll manage to give her as long as possible with the meds etc, you've done all you can.

you and your little pup have my sympathies. Its heartbreaking. A good friend of mine lost his dog unexpectedly last week. Try and take comfort in the good times and make what time you have left special. All the best to both of you

Ahhh downer mate, any true dog owner will know how bad of a time this is for you, hardest thing ever, dunno what i'd do without my little girl.

You're right to stay offline, somethings are just way more important. Just spend some time with the little pooch and try to relax; both of you.

It makes you wonder really... They say they can't operate, I'm fairly certain they can but it's a case of Veterinarians haven't quite caught up with Doctors yet.

I've just saved my puppies life, went out in the garden and he was choking on something, had to ram my fingers down his throat to trigger his gag reflex. Out came the biggest leaf you have ever seen in your life!

Hope all goes well with your dog

anything is operable and as you so rightly say Rick "Veterinarians haven't quite caught up with Doctors yet."
The risks surrounding this procedure are extremely expensive and the dog is unlikely to survive the procedure
a case of the operation was a complete success unfortunately the patient died
As you can appreciate I have looked into this in great detail and as yet have not found anyone in the uk that performs such a procedure any help would be appreciated

I don't know if this will help at all Tony, I certainly don't want to plant hope in you, but my girlfriend swears by Mark Lingard a vet from Lancashire near me. He has done alot of Op's on her horses.

http://www.moyfarmvets.co.uk/ That is their website, apparently he's up there with the best.

Worth a shot eh?

Just had a call back Rick very helpful vets
It appears that the cardiologist that I have already seen is the man in the uk to do this procedure but he advised me that it was not operable successfully

You've probably exhausted all the places already but my parents have been here twice with their cat/dog because of life limiting ilnesses, they were really great but sadly in the cats case no one could ever find out what was wrong with it. IMO the best place to go for something like this.
Anyway, here's the link.

Not nice though having a time put on a life

she has her good days and bad days we have to keep her calm and not let her over do things. Just spoken to the heart specialist he says average life expectancy of a dog with this very rare condition is 18 months but could be longer impossible for him to say one thing that is for sure is that her normal life expectancy has been dramatically reduced
she has already suffered two heart failures in the last few weeks before we had the correct diagnosis he tells me after seeing all her notes from the other vets .
The emergency vet was correct my own vet wrongly diagnosed her condition but still charged me for tests over night stays and wrong medications
The good news is that she is responding very well to her medication and as long as she doesn't over do things she looks perfectly healthy
Dogs give you unconditional love unlike wives
A dog is for life unlike a wife roflol

I have a lil labrador called maddie, an I would hate for the vets to say that to me.

I think its just like insurance, its easier tio 'write it off'. If you were a millionarie I bet theyd operate.

Healthcare for humans as well as pets is as good as your wallet is thick.

Makes me sick.

Wish her well though, sometimes you'd be suprised, something that doesent show up for years after its due means she will probably live a long long time!!
