I need something the works along side with the manual worm drive in the gearbox, say something that works off a drive shaft or wheel.

Is it just so you can disconnect your speedo and not put anymore miles on your car?

If so, try a GPS based heads up display, ive got one for my car (no speed sender in the box cause its too modern!) and its great

They will pick off any metal target, usually a multi toothed wheel of some sort or as jon says wheel/brake studs...

We have 5 on the escort, 2 in the gearbox, one on each front drive shaft and a seperate 1 for the trip meter....

spec sheet below:

There is a ring for sensors at each corner of the car, these can also be linked into sometimes, TVR use a very sophisticated mr sensor on the diff on certain models with a toothed bolted to the driveshaft/diff output flange.
