think you may be best to use some acid etch primer on any bare metal, get it in a can as you will only use a bit.
Apparently it will stick to bare metal better before you put the primer down, if I am wrong, someone will correct me,.

etch first bear metal, or primer wount key to bear metal, then after priming ,get a cheap fizzycan( paint), an do a light coat over primer ,that way when you wet flat it shows all the imperfections

2k is the best bet, just be carefull using it, make sure you wear an airfed mask, a pikey dust mask is not good enough, as 2k is highly poisonous and in 20 years you wont be able to breathe if you get caught
temperature is the key to a good finish, keep it warm, once primed up and flatted down, aim for 2-3 light coats of a solid colour with a 10min flash off period

If its just a one off job, a face mask will be fine.

yes, ive seen the effects on quite a few people,we used to invite them in to talk to our students, including one guy who couldnt breathe without a machine. he also thought it would be ok this time, then just once more, and now his life is fooked.
it just aint worth the risk imo, who knows if you guys are taking risks it may be you in 10 years! work related asthma is a nasty nasty thing.
i can certainly feel the effects of using 2k for 7-8 years, which is why i stopped using it

And I bet they never used to use the PPE like we have now?
When I joined the RAF air fed masks were just coming (1999/2001) in as a legal requirement, and we had no choice not to use them, if we was caught without we would be in serious shit.
I've sprayed plenty of jobs using just a half mask and as above been tested as it was a 4 monthly medical we had to take. I always wear masks, and if they have a life of 60 mins (ours were 60 mins, may vary?) I'll change it under that to make sure, A half mask is fine for the job above imo.
