I see us fucking the planet and making it uninhabitable on the scale it is today as inevitable TBH, the people in power have no real interesting in other people and how they live tomorrow, their interests are in their own lives today mainly.

I stand by my opinion that the Government is the biggest bunch of fuckwits I have ever set my eyes upon.
The REALLY worrying thing is the other parties, none of them fill me with confidence either!

Large scale democracy GUARENTEES that you will never get a decent prime minister, its just not possible.
I think currently we would be better off as a monarchy, but clitmate wise its all acedemic anyway, the chinese and the americans are the only ones that matter climate wise, our contribution to climate change is irrelevant compared to theirs.

Everyone must accept that all governments are corrupt, that is a simple fact related to human nature.
The problem with Labour is they're corrupt AND incompetent!
The whole climate change thing comes and goes, you get armageddon style announcements one minute, then hear nothing for months/years till the goverment need a boost again, being seen to be doing the right thing.
As chips says, they're not really interested, and IMO thats to do with the current 4 year voting period. No one will make the massive investment required for fear of being booted out sharply and th publis wont realise that higher taxation is the price for a century of environmental decadence.
China is an interesting point, int hat they really cant afford to care. they are going through a revolution like we did years ago, just no one knew about the effects of emissions when Britain was industrialised. Unfortunately now we do we try to restrict China's development by denying them the same freedom and raising their costs.

Agreed!
The problem the government have, is they are elected by the general public, and the general public in the main are idiots.
If you got into power and put loads of policies in place that cause massive pain for 10 years but would end up with the country in an awesome condition after 20 years, you would be voted out after 4!
People want what is best for them NOW, so vote accordingly, so the government has to act in line with that to stand a chance at re-election.
If people were elected for 20 years before judgement was passed instead of 4, they might stand a chance of sorting things out.

I suspect what will happen at the next election is Labour will get the boot, the tories will get in and unlike Brown's band aid measures, will take the proactive step of raising taxes and cutting spending on the NHS and schools (as they have historically). They will start to make progress with restoring the countries cashflow by being financially responsible and after 4 years the voting public will decide that "life was better an cheaper under Labour" and we'll go back the other way.
I suspect that if Labor had known 12 years ago that they were in for 12 years they *might* have achieved something worthwhile, but they didnt, they were in for 4 years 3 times.
For this reason and many more the worlds leaders will continue to want to appear to be doing something about climate change, while not really contributing anything significant.

So frustrating how few people can see its the system that is flawed, not the politicians. (im not saying they arent flawed too, but even if you had the worlds cleverest person in power the flawed system would still prevent them doing any good)
Even Brown isnt a stupid man, and if you gave him enough power and 20 years in power I actually think he would be capable of doing some good.
I think you are wrong about the tories though, I dont think they will dare to do anything thats genuinely long term useful as I think they will want to get elected again, sadly they are all sinking to the lowest common denominator.

98% of the Earth's Co2 is generated 'naturally' i.e. not by man. It's not good what we're doing to the planet, but it's not as bad as the doom-mongers like to making out. It just makes great headlines.
And hey, I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure there's an app on your N95(8gig) which can combat climate change!

The politicians are flawed, but thats a function of humans in a position of power and not something thats going to change. Like you say, the system prevents them being able to make radical changes.
I guess the problem with a 20 year period is that it spans a whole generation, so the knee jerk reaction would always be a change in leadership at every election.
Quite possibly I am wrong, who knows, labour might get another term, but if someone doesn't do something about this countries spending (ironically similar to the credit card wielding "I'll pay for it tomorrow" general public then things will only continue to worsen.

1. Gordon Brown is a idiot, he would have trouble running a bath if his life depended on it, what has happened is, he has heard talk of the enviroment and will now try and use it to his advantage by way of him saving the world and then making all of us love him and vote labour again in the next election

2. however climate change is happening, I would suggest watching the al gore movie if you havent already, unfortunatly alot of people who are more obsessed woth $£$£$£ are doing their best to discredit him. But the facts cannot be ignored.

1) He ran the economy for 10 years before becoming PM and that was the time when you could have as much credit as you could fit up yer choofter and it was all very cheap credit, unemployment was low, people were paying less income tax than ever before, when the Tories were last in it was 25%, under labour reduced over the period of their government to 20%.
He has used his experience as chancellor to steer us through the worst recession in decades and things he put in place have probably shortened that recession by 2 years.
So dont believe everything you read in the Sun, just look back and see whats been going on in the country over the last 12 years.
The Tories are NOT going to save you !
2) Watch The Great Global Warming Swindle if you want some interesting facts, it discredits most of the alledged 'facts' used by Al Gore, and this is not one scientist with a theory, this is several very eminant people, all over the globe who share a similar view. Its all bollocks.
If you want to reduce CO2 grow more plants, instead of building more houses, Plants process CO2 as part of Photosynthesis
Dont take my word for it... look on wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photosynthesis
More plants would process the CO2 and convert it to Oxygen.
Stop building shit houses on shit estates for Chavs to live in and plant a few firkin trees.

neilm. Yes he ran the economy for 10 years and gave everyone all the credit they could carry and more money than they could pay back, hence his role in the global economic crisis, like it or not this is how it is. And I dont rely on the sun or the mirror to supply me my facts, I havent red the sun since they chose to follow labour in the last election, and I wont be voting TORY either. I have experience in a couple of countries in regards to the recession and good ol browny is handling it the worst, IMO, Im going to try and keep this short and not get on a whole political rant about how shit they are, in regards to the 2.
What does al gore have to gain by people recycling and lowering their emmisions?? you should really look into the background of the global warming swindle film you mention because its all old research and oppinions that have since been proven wrong, it was probably funded by opec or similar who want you using their products.. I agree that more trees should be planted, and build less chavvy/asylum council houses.

It is easy to run the economy when credit is easily available, creating jobs, minimising unemployment (and the cost of benefits) and generating huge tax income. Remember that, despite the huge amount of cash we've had to give the banks, they paid enormous tax in the good years and probably will again.
However, when individuals, companies or countries depend on borrowed money and low rates you KNOW (or should know) that a day of reckoning will be coming.
He has created an unsustainable Public Sector and allowed their wages and benefits to grow to the point that the rest of us can't afford our own pensions because of the amount of our money that the state needs to fund these people, many (most?) of whom are entirely unproductive, though they may or may not be doing jobs that we want done. And while the rest of us are seeing pay freezes, pay cuts, or loss of employment, many of the public sector staff are seriously threatening to strike for more of our money.
He put policies in place that caused huge house inflation among other things so please don't think for a minute that he was a great chancellor. Or try to persuade me that he was.
The basic rate of income tax has, undoubtedly, reduced under Labour but they have got their hands on our money in lots of other sneaky little ways, some new, some by increasing existing stealth taxes. Overall, we all pay more of our income to the state now than we ever did before.
NI is far higher now than it was and will go higher.
Higher rate tax payers are going to pay 50% - it was only 40% under the Tories.
Council tax up enormously above inflation.
Fuel duty, road tax, first reg fees - all up under Labour.
Airport taxes up.
Passports and driving test/licence fees - all up and going up even more.
I'm afraid I don't believe that some of his "recovery measures" have been anything more than window dressing.
VAT down temporarily to 15%. How much will it go up at the end of the year? At the moment the smart money is saying that it will come into line with Europe at 21%.
Car scrappage - I'll concede that this has been popular and has helped some people sell some cars, but most of these are imported, some would have been sold anyway, and why pretend it was at least partly done for environmental reasons, but have no rules for the car being bought having to be "green" like in France, Germany and the USA.
Quantative Easing (printing money) - I'll be dead before that particular measure is paid off, and my kids kids will still be paying for that measure. What have they done to deserve that?
Oh, and just for the record, I'm not a Tory, Lib Dem or Labourite. They are all shit, it's just that some are more shit than others!
for the whole planet of just for us brits?
in any case, we live in a cold country so you eaither dress like an eskimo or you turn the heaters on

The economy was very stable for 10 years, this was not a flash in the pan it was sustained, but very slow and stable growth, which gave record low inflation, low unemployment etc.
It was the collapse of the banking system in the US that caused the credit crunch, that has led to the world recession, it is nothing to do with the UK Government
Funny, most financial pundits think we're handling it pretty well and although unemployment is still rising we are officially out of recession and as the unemployment figures are always a few months behind then things arent as bad as the media would like everyone to think.
If you have watched the Great Global Warming Swindle you will understand that much of what has gone on in this country was to do with Margret Thatcher, she had seen what the power of the unions, in particular the miners had done to previous Tory government and was not going to have that happen to her, she did not trust the arabs and didnt want to be beholding to them for oil, so her agenda was to discredit fossil fuels, smash the unions and rely on nuclear power and our own reserves of North Sea Gas, with Nuclear being the saviour of us all.
The discrediting of fossil fuels was the start of the global warming swindle, back in the early 70's we thought we were heading from an ice age.... Hmm got that wrong eh.
As it has now come to pass this was short termism we have closed our mines even though there are millions of tonnes of coal under our feet, we are now buying in coal and gas from abroad and potentially will be held to ransom by our Eastern European neighbours to heat our own homes and light our own factories etc
Thats what you have to thank the Tories for.
Dont get me wrong I am as disillusioned with the state of the nation as the next man, but at the end of the day its the best of a bad job.
As for national debt and the day of reckoning they can start by doing away with this £38 road tax for little gay cars and the zero road tax on even gayer cars like the BMW One. Charge the feckers £100, its still a good deal even at that.

What I meant was that throughout the stable "good" years other countries used this time to clear debt, plan for the future etc.... but labour used them to raise borrowing and increase debt.... anyway, off topic, to the whole eco topic.

Top thread. All the goverment are bothered about is filling there pockets so that they can retire early and live of the money they have made.I think they should all pay that money back for there expences. If it was me or you that had took all that money we would of been locked up by now. This country isnt what it used to be.
