E46 M3 or E39 M5 for around 10k?
id take the m5 anyday for a bigger better and faster executive family car. 400bhp in a family 4 door? itll probably be my next decent car.
neither will be cheap everyday runners.

I only travel 160 miles or so commuting, and that is 80 miles on a sunday night, 80 miles on thurs/fri when I come home, so not doing too many short trips...
I am VERY tempted by an M5, it has to be said...

for me, id go for the m5 as i have a wife and child so loads of stuff to lug about and 4 doors for the babbs.
if i was single or no kids then id have the m3 as its far better looking, and probably handles a bit better too being lighter

I know this sounds daft but round my way it seems like every dick head boy racer has moved away from the saxo and ''financed'' an m3 since they've came down in price...sorry to everyone who owns one but isnt 1 of these!
Sum1 I know had an m3 and loved it to bits, got to admit it sounded awsome, real raspy race car sound to it and it went like stink!
For me though it'd be the m5 all day long, can bet it'll be the best all rounder with its big boot,4doors and big lazy v8 with all that low down grunt.....and best of all, theres LOADS of m3's on the road, how many m5's do you see

maybe the 5 isnt the barge i thought it was lol
if i got 3 tho, id get the convertible
go and drive both of them......both awesome cars in their own right.
m3 is too harsh for every day use in comparison to m5,very easy to potter around in the m5.
i drove my m5 to donnington-seating 4 in total comfort with tv on and cruise control.then proceeded to thrash the life out of it on track all day-surprising qute a few people.......then drove home at a lovey leisurely pace....... awesome car.
i sold my m5 and took an e46 m3 in the deal-and instantly wished i hadnt got rid of the m5.i would chose the m5,and im under 40(39!).

I'd have the 3 over the 5 and i have a wife and 3 kids
Mate recently sold a 5 very cheap. Fuck me it's a fast car!
I actually thought it was faster than the 3!!
That ph one above at 8k is certainly not too cheap!!

Id have the M3, E39 are getting pretty old now and are starting to get tired in terms of bushes and stuff, they just arent as good as they were
Still awesome cars, but I would sooner have an E46, more nimble too.

They are about 500kg lighter in the real world than they are on paper to be fair mate!
You would never think it was nearly 2 tonne you were throwing about when you drive one.
That said, the same is true of the E46 which feels lighter than it is too.
SUCH good cars both of them, they both manage to outperform what you would expect.

After seeing an E46 up close I would go for that, look awesome IMO. M5 is just too big for me, and it needs all those horses but a really well specced all round motor. M3 though
drive them both. M3 if you like more pose and playful. M5 if you like comfort and cruise with the occasional play. My M5 is the single best thing I have owned. I considered selling all my Cosworth stuff and putting it towards an M3 too. Have the best of both

*Edit* From what I have seen 10k will get a nicer M5 than it will a nice M3

I been look or should i say day dreaming and to look at half decent one with spec and miles and not to early is 14k really.
I love the M5, but tbh i think i would go M3 as newer car and is better looking? Though tbh i have not driven either so cannot really comment.

Given the low number of miles you are going to be doing, what about this:

Wont depreciate at all, and you have plenty of money spare to maintain it to the highest possible standard
