I have started on building myself a track car. I have used the search function and found some things but not one big topic with the negative things and the positive things of a RS Turbo as track car.

I have plans for:

Roll cage
Cossie brakes on front and rear with ds2500 pads
race seats and belts
Polybushed allround
Good suspension set up

What are the good things to spend cash on after that?

Go for hp?
Go for oilcooler?
Get a alu fueltank in the car for safety?
Get adjustabel front track arms?
Make rear end adjustabel?

Is a short shift kit a pice you need on the track or not?

Also what are the good and bad sides of a rs turbo as track car?

 

big/uprated intercooler......and erm...baffled sump,depends on how deep your pockets are.....

 

suppose the best person to contact would be 'micky' on here, seeing as he runs a dedicated rs turbo track car

 

Don't know yet how deep i want to go on this project so i want to have clear for myself what would be the best upgrades to go for!

about the baffled sump is it something that is easy to DIY? or are there good ones for sale?

get it as light as you can and the best brakes you can afford,then suspension,diff ,then reliable engine mods i would have thought 160/180 bhp

Not going for big power, but something fast but reliable.



Before the brake upgrade using standard callipers and green stuff pads with grooved discs.

 

Micky will have a good reply to this. He's got an RST thats does very well on track, and with simple mods from what I understand. Just had a '250bhp' NMS engine though

couldn't agree more- above 170/180bhp the rst is crying out for much better brakes and handling to make use of the power.

 

ive read on here that carl of nms fame thinks the cvh sump is pretty good and they weld a single plate in them,give him a call or do a search on here.....

 

Sack the cossie brakes. Go for the full setup from an ST170. So much better by a mile

 

Front and rear? Or are they only for the front? Will have a look on them!

Tyres will be some slicks i can take home from my work. We have suzuki's racing on 15" so i take some used slicks home.

What are you guys using for suspension? Koni's aren't that great are they?

 

If it's a Series 2 bin the junk standard front ARB and fit a Series 1 job, or better still an RS1600i set up for starters. Will make for a much better handling car.

 

Fronts would be the st170 conversion. You'd need 16" wheels for that on the front. You'll need to drill the hubs out for bigger bolts for the calipers and use 12mm spacers for the calipers.

Rear you can use a normal rear disk conversion from a normal focus with an rs 2000 hand brake cable. Obviously you'd need brackets knocked up for the rear.

 

sort the suspension and breaks,add a roll cage then when all is set up properly you can add the power,id say 180ish would be ok for track though

 

Currently building an S2 track day car myself and was wondering about a good suspension system to go for does anyone make a decent aftermarket front ARB setup either based on the S1 or something else as trying to get genuine S1 or RS16i parts is like finding hens teeth!

 

Unfortunatley not. The actual roll bar, and mounts are only Ford parts, unless you can find a Turbo Technics set up, but these are even rarer again. Only MEF Motorsport used to make aftermarket, rosejointed tie bars but not the full assembley. Besides the have stopped making MK3/4 Escort parts as the interest is so low. Jano @ Oddkiddcreations makes heavy duty tie bars though. He usually does have ARB's in stock as well. He recently had a mint full, RS1600i set up, for Ł200, which is less than I paid for mine! id of said an mfi set up after the brakes and suspension, but first fit a roll cage as some tracks dont let you slicks without one

 

What is so much better on the front ARB of a S1? Why does it improve handeling so much?

can somebody explain with photo's or something?

 

the RS1600i has an even better front arb, not sure why though

 

The RS16i S1 and the Rare Turbo Technics rollbar setups designed for the Mk3 Escort gearbox.

These rollbar setups have a seperate tie bar which allows the change of the castor angle.

I.e where the wheel sits in the arch, forward or back in the arch.

When using this setup the rollbar is seperate to the tie bar, unlike a Mk4 where the rollbar and tie bar is all one and has no adjustment. Very crude, cheap to produce and not good at all. All the Mk4 escorts have the same design from a 1.1 to and RST. So in other words you would have the same setup as an escort popular.

The RS16i Rollbar bracket setup is made from an alloy mix making it very light, it also has a very large rollbar compared to the S1 item. It also is a one piece casting which has no parts to bolt together unlike the S1 item.

The S1 rollbar bracket is made from steel, which is heavy adding more to the front, also rusts if not covered.
The connection between the two corner brackets is made via a tube section thats bolts to them. This also cracks and breaks.


So the ideal setup is using an RS16i rollbar uprated oversize tie bars with billet rollbar to tie bar clamps, with adjustable TCA's, MTX75 Gearbox, 16in wheels and decent coilovers.
