Steep price tag but how hard to fit a mk4 and will it take the abuse?

Ive not used one in a mk4, but generally ive always been impressed with quaiffe products, I know many people with FWD vauxhalls using them over 400bhp.

My understanding of RST boxes though is that the diff is the least of your worries, its the rest of the box that is weak?

That link is for a complete 'box?

The fundamental problem though, is that the concept of people tuning these RST's to the level that we do is actually beyond sane comprehension. Nobody in competition or racing is interested in what we do, hence all the 'proper' parts are not aimed at us. Consequently, none of these parts are warrantied for the sort of power levels we are putting through them. Would you pay £4k+ for a 'box knowing that if it shits itself, they'll not honour it? I wouldn't!! LOL.

Does look very nice though.

Is it? to me it looks to me like it uses the original gearbox maincase.

Although when I replied I thought it was just the diff as I didnt read it properly.

Same problem with the quaiffe gearkit for the escort cossy really, no one in rallying (which seems to be quaiffes main focus with the escos boxes) has over 500bhp on one due to the restrictors.

Personally if I was ever to do a RST, i would use a mondeo V6 box and quaiffe diff instead.

The IB5 or BC as it is known in the RS is labelled by Ford as a light duty FWD box. It is a very good box when used for waht it is meant for. I had both the MTX75 and BC apart recently, and the physical size difference between the shafts is significant - the MTX just looks beefy...

Once you've modded the car to accept the MTX - which is a fair amount of work - you're sorted, as even if you do break it - they can be had for £50 from the scrappy..

Yes mate.

Strong box to begin with, slightly heavier is one downside and lack of standard LSD is another, but personally I think its worth that in exchange for being both strong and cheaply available.

You need custom shafts, and a couple of custom mounts, but it bolts straight up to the engine itself.

heard about these months back, but they were having issues getting the selector in the right place and pushed up the selector position.
a guy on xrtwo.com was looking to get one, but they may not be suitible now due to the new selector position, maybe the same for the escort too.
only in racing would you even think of getting one.

if i was gonna get a box it would be a MTX75 with quaife internals, all in and fitted by jano oddkidd would be 4k.or id save a grand and fit it myself, agreed the size difference of the shafts between bc and mtx75 is quite substantial

the mtx isn't as long IIRC it's just bulkier, so may interfere with servo, would on my mk2 fiesta anyhow.
custom shafts is all really as a problem, mounts would be easy to fab.

^ makes sense, do you need to weld a mount underneath the rear of the engine bay aswell for this box?

Does look very nice though.

I had Sadev quote me NOT happy on a 6-speed sequential box for the car.

£16,000 and is rated to 300hp

crazycage did my innter wing, and it's a really nice job. It's basically resahped so it tapers in giving more clerance. The ST box doesn't need any modding to the inner wing, but the ratio's are short - 6th is shorter than the std 5th. Would be good for a track car, not so good for road.

Surely that box in the link is only rated to around 150bhp? Or am I wrong.

Doesnt say on the site, but if it just replaces the standard box with the only advantage being shift speed then you may be right!? Doesnt mention shot peened gear/shafts etc.. and it says the ATB LSD is optional?!

as above really, wots the gearbox rated to? if its for a n/a St150 my thinking is a high power RST will destroy it

I'm suprised at that i always thought the ST170 had quite long gearing compared to most MTX boxes.
My understanding was the 6 speed box and its long ratios was one of the reasons the ST170 underperforms a bit.
nice to see the claearance though- does look like it fits a bit better than the mtx box

So with the st170 box, whats the crack with driveshafts? does the diff come out in the same place or are new shafts needed, in which case would it be possible to go equal length?
